My car was hit and the person who did it decided that they would drive off without leaving any details (thanks...). So I've taken it along to BMW who would like the princely sum of £1600 to fix it.

So now I have 3 choices, live with it (makes no difference to the car), pay up to BMW or claim on my insurance. I have protected no claims, but I have no idea what it will do to my policy come renewal time. The excess no the policy is £450, so it's not the sort of money that can be found down the back of the sofa!

I've not made any other claims, in the past 5 years but this one will go down as my fault as we don't have a 3rd party to pin it on. Has anybody else made a fault claim and what's happened to the cost of your policy the following year? Did it go through the roof or was it just a small increase.

I had 9 years protected NCB, was paying around £500/yr. Had a fault claim (declared), next premium was £450.

The Mrs had a fault claim with protected NCB, insurance went up ~10% next time, probably the same as if there he been no claims.

Insurance is a mystery.

i have personally had a fault claim and lost my ncb (oh the joys of being young) and ive found prices have gone down.

my father in law had to make a fault claim due to a nice lorry wrecking the side of his car and has made a negligible difference. you do however have to pay the excess.

depending on the age of your car and how much it affects you, perhaps get some cheaper quotes? you may be able to get it less than excess (you'd be suprised by looking about).

I assume your car was hit while parked?

Where was it hit? If for example it was outside your house could you ask around neighbours to find out whether they saw or heard anything?

If a public car park could you check to see if there was any CCTV at the incident?

If it isn't possible to trace the driver then I'd suggest speaking to your insurance company to see if you were to claim how this would affect your premium. With protected NCB you'd hope the hit wouldn't be too bad!

You could also enter your current details with and without a fault claim on a comparison website to see how this affects your quotes. It'll give you an idea of the costs you'll suffer.

Take it to in independent body shop to get a quote to repair the damage - probably cheaper than getting BMW to do it

Thanks for all the other replies, just to answer the questions above. Nobody saw anything and there was no CCTV, so I'm stuffed really. I spoke to my insurers and they say my NCD will freeze at it's current level (15 years!) and I can't make another claim this year.

I might give it a go with the claim added, that's a good shout.

Having just run it through my current insurer, they won't insure me (I don't think they allow drivers with claims) but with GoCompare the prices are in the same ballpark for the cheapest provider. So it might make sense to get it sorted.
