Hi,

I wondered if I might ask whether my car is still useful or if it will have to be scrapped?

It's a 56 plate mondeo edge, with 2 litre diesel engine, and it has developed a turbo charger failure. The glow plug lamp started to flash and the car couldn't accelerate above 55 mph. I have decided to sell the car, as I don't know anything at all about cars, so I prefer to have a newish one that isn't likely to go wrong. The car only has 30,000 miles on the clock? Do you think it would be of value to the kind of person who could replace the turbo charger themselves for a relatively cheap price using used parts?

Apart from this this the car has had new brake discs (which became rusty from under-use), and one new spring. It's also had a new battery because we thought the battery had gone wrong, when in fact we'd just left the aircon on while my son was listening to music, in the drive of our house. The car was bought from nearly new and driven since then by one careful lady owner (me).

Do you think this is still a car for someone or just useful for parts?

Thanks!

Aircon wont run without the engine. Its mechanically driven. I'd scrap it, chances are the turbo has disintegrated and filled the engine with shrapnel.

List it on eBay. Give as much info as you can - good stuff and the turbo issue. 99p no reserve will end up in a bid more than the scrappy.

Also, are you sure the turbo is lunch? Have you taken it to another garage for a second opinion? Could be a hose come loose / a cheap fix. Also, fitting a recon turbo is not that expensive. Personally I'd go this route first before throwing the towel in completely.

Ebay it for 99p starting bid, no reserve. Give it a good clean, take decent pics, including old MOTs, service book and invoices , put a decent description on as well - set it for a weekend afternoon finish. I couldn't tell you what it's worth, but the above should get you a reasonable price.

Edit: beaten to it whilst typing rolleyes

Sorry to hear of your hard luck with the car. Very annoying at such low mileage, someone on our street has a similar age mondeo and also has had the turbo fail & since then it has had multiple visits to the garage and I'm still not sure its right.

If I were you I would do as the others have said with the ebay listing and since you do low mileage buy a petrol engine version or indeed a petrol Japanese model. I think if the rest of the car is in good shape you might get more than you think selling it as spares and repairs.

Good luck , let us know what you think + decide to do.

How do you know it's a turbo charger fault which is catastrophic? Did you get it inspected by a proper Ford mechanic?

I had a similar problem on my E92 at 25000 miles, turned out it was a £10 actuator valve which BMW replaced for me. The valve was stuck closed, no boost.

Did you read the fault codes from the computer? You can usually buy fault code readers for less than £25 which can be connected to your phone or a laptop.

That is very low mileage for a turbo to fail - I suspect lack of use has caused a recirculation valve, or boost solenoid, or actuator to get stuck/fail.

It could also be as simple as a split pipe somewhere.

I wouldn't throw it away just yet...

Thanks for this. I got it checked by our local ford service place but they just said "Turbo gone. £2000 to fix". I phoned back after starting this thread to ask what the errors codes were and things like that but they didn't want to make the time to take the paperwork out. They said they'll email on Monday. I thought that if I could find out what the codes were then I could take it to our nearest Bosch approved garage, as I hear they are meant to be good with turbo problems. Big dilemma about whether to keep the car. We love it to bits but are nervous of it turning into a money bit or worse still bringing the A14 to a standstill.

Thanks!

So £2K for Ford to fix, which means a good local garage will charge sub £1K.

Your biggest problem is under usage. Assuming you bought at 1 year old with 10,000 miles. That means you've done 20,000 in 6.5 years.... that's 3,000 miles a year.... That is simply killing a diesel. With that sort of mileage buy petrol next time!!

Could even get some money off a Turbo Technics one. They're good turbos, too.

Doesn't make financial sense to sell as is, take it to a Ford specialist and have it fixed, then sell it/trade it in

You'll lose more money selling as is, than you would have to put into it to fix the turbo, plus you'll get a million and one people sayin 'oooo it's worth £200 but I'll give you £250 as I'm kind', if you put it on eBay

IMO of course

On that year of tdci the turbo is controlled by an electronic actuator. These are prone to failure and usually give a turbo failure fault code. It's a little black box bolted to top of the turbo. Dead easy to replace, Ebay is full of them. Going rate is around £100.
Also check main intercooler pipe as they often split, giving total lack of boost.

Take it to an independent garage (a Ford specialist if you can find one) for a second opinion. Don't tell them that you've already taken it somewhere and that they said the turbos dead.

Echo really whats been said above, you like the car a lot so its worth getting a second opinion.

If you were to go down the recon turbo unit, you d be well under a grand.

From their lack of details is sounds like the Ford garage are conning you and are after selling you a new car, or installing a whole new "crate" engine which would generate most money for them. Please do what previous posters have said and get an independent to look at it and give you a quote. If nothing else then you can at least tell a potential buyer how much it will cost. Ideally you get it fixed then keep it or sell it.

I'm afraid marketing has given us a country full of "disposable minded" people now who don't like fixing things.

Thanks for that. I have a very good independent mechanic who I can ask and I'll see what the bosch garage say too. :-) Thanks ever so much!

As other have mentioned highly unlikely to be the turbo at fault the actuator valave is a common failure point so is a split turbo pipe causing lack of boost.

Ford don't want the work they rather sell you a new car take to another garage and see what they say. Or if local to me south wales im more than happy to take a look at it.

Fix it service it either keep or sell on and buy a petrol that mileage really isn't suitable for a diesel.

Hello again,

Would you mind my asking a technical question about the fault on my Mondeo? I finally managed to persuade the Ford garage to tell me what they found when the looked at the car. It had these error codes:

P0191

Internet says:
(Fuel pressure sensor malfunction) - non-electrical fault
Symptoms:
  • Engine will not start - glow plug warning lamp flashes.
Cause:
  • In most cases this is a software fault. In the process, the system recognizes a fuel pressure
which is implausible for the given conditions.

P132B

Internet says:

Use innotec turbocleaner to clean the turbo

P2288

Internet says:

These vehicles will only start when the target fuel value is set. This is 230 bar +/-50 bar
If the fuel rail pressure goes outside these limits then the vehicle won't start and the glow plug light flashes
The main cause of this is the high fuel rail pressure reading due to blocked injectors ( not leaking back fuel )

I checked and the garage only read the codes, they didn't check the pipes, valves, solenoid or actuator that people have suggested they should have looked at. When I asked why, they said they'd seen this before and it always needs a new turbo.

Do you think they are right about this, given that the car only has 30k miles on the clock and I drive it on lots of short slow journeys and almost never drive it at motorway speeds?

They charged me just £100+ to check the codes and are offering to replace the turbo for £2000. If it's just something small that needs fixed, then I have a great independent car mechanic who would do it for reasonable money. We just would really value some advice on where to look first.

Thanks!
