Insuring an Italian car from the UK

So I'm a UK/Italian national living in Italy, and insurance here is quite insane. Tax is worked out as follows:

2 litre engine: Luxury car

2.5 litre engine: Super Luxury car



I've heard a few people here are insuring their car through foreign brokers. I was going to buy a classic Mini and drive it from the UK and laugh at the tax man, the guy at the fuel pump (self service pumps are still uncommon here) and the tight, winding alleys where I live.

Then I decided I'll buy a 3.2 Brera. Because Red paint. Insurance is 3000 Euros yearly, that's perhaps thrice what I'd pay back in Blighty with my three year's no-claims. I'm sure I could have insured a UK Mini with a UK broker and even kept my UK custom plate if I drove the car back every year for an MOT. Can I insure an Italian car with a UK broker? How stressful would it be and would I actually save any money?

Oh yeah; the tax on the Brera is 674 Euros yearly. Must be an Ultra Luxury car.

Doable as long as the Italians don't give you grief for driving a UK regd car for longer than 6mths. You need an insurer who will give you overseas cover for unlimited periods. Not many around, try stuartcollins.

It will cost you probably twice what the cheapest UK only insurance will cost, but worth getting a quote for.
