What car: Medium sized hatch recommendations

Mrs Chris71 needs a sensible mid-sized hatch for up to £2k. It needs to come with four doors, as many airbags and NCAP stars as possible and a reasonably frugal attitude to fuel. Decent motorway refinement (relatively speaking) would be good too.
To me this screams Focus or Golf, but which one? Failing that, are their any other options we should consider?
She doesn't want anything particularly large, so an Octavia could be tricky to argue. To be honest, I don't know a great deal about the Leon or A3 of the era you'd find in our price range.
We've had a mk1 Focus in the past, which ticked most of the boxes. The only thing is, it began consuming oil at a great rate shortly before a nice gentleman on the A1 drove his 3-Series into us at speed and wrote off both cars. Now they're all getting a bit long in the tooth, does anyone know if that's something to watch out for on the 1.6 Focus? Piston rings or something?
