I'm not talking about a specialist broker for sports cars or exotica, but PH'ers that run "boring" cars, Mondeo's, Astra's, Insignia's, Golf's and the like?

Seems to me, like record shops it is a dying industry...same with high street travel agents.....

Shame for the people that work there......or, is there always going to be room for the "personal touch"?

I live across the road from this insurance shop on the Greenwich high road:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.483992,0.001105,...

As you'll see from the telephone number on the sign it's been there many many years... but in the two and half years I've been in my place I've not seen a single person enter (or in) the shop, ever. Every morning at 7.45 the owner arrives, removes all the window grilles and sets up for the day.

IME, the majority of brokers seem to survive off business from non-motor policies (i.e. from large local firms insuring themselves for EL/PL claims) or from motor trade policies.

Yep - used my local branch of APlan this year. Whilst not the cheapest, the quote was pretty competitive and I figured it was worth the £20 or so extra to be able to deal with them face to face in case of issues.

Here in Farnborough we have Sheltons, now A-Plan. For the five years we've been in business they have looked after my van policies, and the shop insurance and liability.

I like dealing with someone I can walk in and talk to.

I passed a long established broker recently, the large sign on his door read:-

" YES, WE GIVE FREE QUOTES"

Has anybody ever charged for giving a motor quote.....ever??

I pass this shop frequently and often wonder how they stay in business. Perhaps the owner has the freehold and there are little overheads.

I pass an APlan on the way to work, but have never used a broker. My parents always used to, and everyone of that era, but no longer. I am sure for older people, businesses and other tradespeople it would make sense, as after all they're still in business for a reason.

Used a broker for the first time for my motor trade policy and even then they're in a completely different part of the country and I deal with them over the phone.

I'm not surprised it's a dying industry - the administrivia is outstanding. Almost every time I update the MID they send me a list of vehicles in the post - time/cost of that must be insane!

Yes, I do the legwork on comparison sites and then ask them if they can do better - maybe 75% of the time my local A Plan does.

There are a few general brokers who still maintain a personal lines book of business, but many now focus on commercial and only accommodate personal lines for their commercial customers, some won't even touch personal lines.

Consumers usually want the cheapest quote, so online comparison sites usually offer that; brokers are generally more about adding value to the chain so are not always going to be the cheapest. The national personal lines brokers such as Swintons etc. can probably compete on price, but the smaller independent brokers generally don't get the rates. Buying groups such as Countrywide and Keychoice offer preferential rates to brokers, but not many insurers offer the products through them now.
