Painting Brake Calipers

Not sure if this has been covered before but here goes.

Giving the tbc mobile (X-type) the once over and the pristine alloys are being let down somewhat by slightly corroded and rusty callipers

They are originally grey/silver so thinking about just sprucing them up.

Can i just use a tin of Silver Hammerite at £6

Or is it better using a specific calliper paint.

Will it last as long?

Grab a tin of high-temp I'd say, just in case! Best way to get a lasting finish is to not be lazy and take them off the car and strip them down. Obviously that's quite a big commitment, but it's worth it.

Mix a little gold hammerite into some silver for that freshly plated new look.

I use high temp spray paint. I don't bother removing the calipers, just give them a wire brushing and blast with brake cleaner, then paint them in situ. I do that once a year, as they usually get munged up with brake dust.

Just changed my front discs and pads and while I was there I considered painting the calipers and hangers....for all of 10 seconds, and then I thought there are better things to do with my time. 99% of people would never notice either way. Gave the bits a good wire brushing and spray with cleaner and put it all back.

25 years ago I might have done it.

I used high temperature aerosol paint too.

I don't enjoy doing it, but I'm one of those people who notices everything and cars with rusty brake calipers and disc centres look like scrap metal to me. Painting calipers and discs is just something I need to do or it really grates on me. Wish it didn't - but it does.

You painted the calipers but did nothing about the rusty brown line that starts where the disc isn't cleaned by the pads...........

Just saying like - that would irritate me as much as grubby calipers

I lasts as long as the calipers if you prepare and treat the surfaces

Edited to add - just been out and checked the discs on the Merc - done last Year in May - no rust
