Yet another what car thread

I'm changing my car soon. I've currently got a mk2 Golf gti 8v but I'm looking for something a bit more comfortable and easy to do longer trips in. I do less than 5 thousand miles a year as I've got a work van so mpg really isn't too much of a worry. I'm looking for something comfortable and easy to live with but also something quick and fun for those times when you fancy a bit of a blast. It's also needs to be big enough that I can carry a load of gear in the boot for surfing and camping and my road bike on the roof so two sweater sports cars are out unfortunately. I've been looking at,

Mk IV Golf R32
Mk V Golf GTI
Focus ST
E46 330ci

But I literally can't decide between them, has anyone got any advice or useful information that could make this a bit easier for me. I'm pretty indecisive. One day I'm out test driving the ST and pretty much sold then I think for the mpg I'll get out if it I'd rather the R32. Then there's the ever reliable GTI and the cruising capabilities of the 330ci. Any advice would be much appreciated

Yeah that would be useful wouldn't it. Up to about £7k really as a nice R32 is about that but the other three are available for less in the same condition. If pay the extra for the right car though. Just awful at making decisions!

The 4.2 V8? Isn't it super unreliable? The Mk2 Gti had cost me literally nothing at all in the last three years to look after it so not looking for a car that I've got to pile money into to keep to on the road. Want something pretty reliable

My S4 4.2 V8 has been trouble free for the last 18 months. The earlier one was a 2.7 V6 twin turbo. Cracking cars.

I have been and looked at S3's. I don't know why I just don't like them that much. There's no real reason behind it they just don't do much for me. The S4 though! Assumed that they would be an expensive car to look after. To be fair like I say I do hardly any mileage. I haven't driven the Golf since last Saturday!

I know they`re not everyones cup of tea but would you consider one of these? This was mine I sold a few months back. Under rated car and you can get a mint low miler likethe one I had for not much cash.

Like yourself I was looking at 330s R32s and ST220s. I tried a 330 and a friend has an E46 325 sport. I would have taken an R32 had one ticked all my boxes but having driven only two ST220s I decided that was the car. Handles well for a large bus and the noise with a nice exhaust is worth every penny. Interior has everything you need and the recaros are a top job. Like I say under rated car. I only sold as it as my mate harrassed me to sell and I had come into some extra cash.

I've got to be honest I've always been a VW man and I like German cars. The Focus ST is the only Ford I've ever considered, might give these a look. Can't see me picking one over a S4 though! Never even thought about one of them
