"there is a guy in France who is about to buy it"
Discussion
Wasn't from a dealer, but I did ring up someone about a Land Rover Discovery. Said I was interested and could I come and have a look etc. His response?
"Yes, you can have a look at it but I am getting lots of interest in the car. Can I schedule you for a 2:15 appointment? I have people booked in at 2:00 and 2:30 so that should be enough time to have a look at the car and have a quick go round the block in it."
Alarm bells about warm engines and cold starts did come to mind but I decided it was worth a look anyway. I turned up at 2:10 and found the previous appointment to be somewhat lacking in attendance. Similarly I finished up at 2:30 and, before I left, had a quick smoke to see if anybody else turned up. When I left at 2:40 and drove past his house, the car hadn't moved and his front door was shut.
I was close to buying it but as I pulled up from the quick test drive it was 2:28 and I asked him if we could talk money. His first reaction was to look at his watch and then overexaggerate looking around as if trying to make me hurry up and buy it before his next "appointment". If this was his reaction to someone wanting to buy the car I hate to think how he treated it come service time. I took this as a cue to say "oh, sorry, forgot about your next appointment, you'd better prepare for that" and left.
The strangest thing? The car was for sale at £1100. On a competitively priced 2014 320d or Mondeo or something I could understand appointments, but why make up you're so busy on a car at that end of the market when plainly nobody else turned up? It cost him a sale as well as if he'd have spent five extra minutes we could have come to a deal.
I checked a few days later on AutoTrader and it was still up for sale. I was sitting in my recently-purchased vehicle.

When I bought the Z4 I viewed it at about 1pm, the salesman said 'I've got a guy who will definitely buy it, he's got a mechanic coming to see it at 5pm today & if it's ok, he'll buy it'. Yeah yeah, sure you have mate...
Anyway, I bought the car & the next day whilst visiting a friend a bloke walked by & said 'Is that your car?' - then went on to tell me how he'd had the finance all ready to go but was waiting for a mechanic to check over the car for him - at 5pm.

True tale from yesterday:
Man rings on a vehicle we have for sale, wants to give 12.5K, its on at 13K, thank him for his offer but tell him it has to be 12.8K, rings back again asking me to take the 12.5 which I refuse. Then he texts and says quote "im going to look at others today, my offer stands".
I text him back, tell him someone from London has rung, showing serious interest. No reply.
Cue 10am this morning, he rings and offers 12.6K...car is sold I tell him, went to london at tea time yesterday (12.8k)....one fed up man.
Its not always a lie when dealers say others are interested.
At £13K it won't be a rare car. Anyone getting upset about not getting a common car at that price point has some serious issues. I had an acquaintance who wouldn't budge the last £50 after the seller had already made generous concessions. I could understand it if money was tight but this was someone on well into six figures.

Wasnt rare, but was priced really keenly and in the right colour scheme....case of not wanting to buy without 500 off, even though it was cheapest and nicest around...he will end up giving more for the same. Mental how some people think.Arranged to see a TVR wedge a few weeks ago.
Older seller, daughter was fielding the calls.
There were a few people wanting to see, but he couldn't show it till the next day, not before 11, as I was first I was booked for the first visit.
Getting in the car at 9 received a text to say it had just been sold.
Presume a trader was a little pushier than I had been.

I laid down a deposit on a car and couldn't pick it up for a couple of days. The seller was a home dealer who was legitimately trading, but a bit of a t
t. He was talking to me about how it was hard to shift cars and it was really slow. So I called him and asked if I could collect the car later with the cash and he said 'ooh, I don't know there's a lot of interest in this one'. I said fine, I'll come and get my deposit then! All of a sudden after that the 'interest' faded away and I collected the car, when I wanted and with 6 months RFL. Win!

Drove up to Rochdale to buy a Merc W124 with a pal. Car had clearly been on the lot for some months as it was filthy and had a pile of dirt around each tyre.
"No mate, I won't deal on it because I can sell this any day of the week. The Nigerians all want them, they export them over there".
I looked around expecting to see that his forecourt now looked like Rourkes Drift but apart from his oppo kicking the tyre on a Focus there was no one but us there.

Couple years back. Phoned a guy and asked if hios car was till for sale (seemed like a good 1st question) He sounded Polish then told me that he wasn't prepared to move on the price at all. I told him I'd like to see it before I decide whether I wanted to buy it yet. He told me he wasn't interested and rung off.
Bizarre.
Bizarre.

Slightly off topic I've recently been trying to buy a C250 CDI estate and found one that was ideal and from a franchised Mercedes dealer, a deal was done over the phone and through email and I was already the next day to call up with my card details to place a deposit so far so good. The next day I received an email from the dealer stating that they were going to knock £1000 off of my trade in as he had discussed the figures with his sales manager and they agreed that Honda Civics are notoriously unreliable and they are reducing the figure and still doing me a favour to close the deal. If they had called and said they had a cash buyer for that one with no tradein and they'll find another for me with the agreed trade in value then I might have agreed (but not eith the unreliability excuses) needless to say my money went elsewhere.

So how many times have you used that method to, well, "help" your prospective buyer to make an "informed decision"?Im at the stage where Im under zero pressure to sell cars, if a customer buys great, if they dont no biggy.
The daily shed was up for sale last month.
I priced it appropriately., and fairly.
First guy to phone up, and turn up inspects it.
He pays full price knowing it is a good prIce for him too.
Spend 30 minutes going through every receipt. Service stamp cross referenced. And showing new parts fitted.
I could have eeked out another £200 by wasting a few evenings and weekends with time wasters. But - the lack of hassle was worth the lesser price.
The buyer rucked up with cash. Agreed that my price was fair and stumped up there and then.
The last toy was sold to a guy in Sweden. Honestly priced. he and his mate came over to inspect. Deal done instantly.
