When you see the number of vehicles left running and stationary for tens of minutes on end, I am not surprised to see this.
I don't agree with diesel being targetted, but what's wrong with turning your engine off? i am sure there may be some sorts of specialist vehicles that may require the engine to run periodically, but otherwise just turn the switch!

Why on earth would you put up with a diesel only to waste your modest running cost saving over a proper engine by just sitting idling?
I'll add to that that diesels do make an unpleasant smell and sound fairly offensive idling as they knock and clatter away. Saying all that, London will need a lot more than the elimination of diesels to make me want to spend time there.

Makes sense, where I live there is a builders yards and they used to leave their vehicles running all morning , resulting in a terrible smell & smoke as well as the noise. I complained to the council and they stopped. There was no one in the vehicles, they just kept them running while they were having a tea or fag which sometimes meant over 30 mins.

If I'm waiting for my wife I just leave the engine on instead of getting sweaty.
I note that the Islington documents on this are suitably vague about how long is acceptable:
"Switch off your engine if it looks like you could be waiting for more than a minute or two."
So thats just 100% difference in their number.

The Dumfries and Galloway Council staff who use the Council pool cars to go to the McDonalds drive through in Dumfries then sit in the pool cars whils eating their food for 15 to 20 mins or more also keep the engines running. Really annoys me and i keep meaning to email the reg numbers to the council.
it is 1: Costly (my money not theirs)2: Damaging to the environment 3: Basically irresponsible 4: hopefully they are en route somewhere and not using the vehicles soley to go for lunch. That in my book amounts to fraud/theft whatever.

I'm all for this because 1) There's really no excuse to leave your engine idling unless you are only stopped for a very short time 2) It's making the Daily Wail readership's heads explode.

So you're allowed (although not encouraged) to leave the engine running in traffic; the council must presumably be aiming the fine at people waiting to pick people up and that sort of thing. this is completely f

People get shot and murdered everyday and we have people who want to report people for sitting in a macdonald car park for 15 minutes while the engine is on.
I keep my engine on because well like a few have said air con for a start and other general advantages of having a bloody car!
I think there are bigger and better things to do in the world to reduce polution.
These assholes called the gov have got some cheek to sit their and promote Derv cars and the use of Derv fuel charging more for it in way of tax on the fuel - should they not have spent some of this money on finding ways to cut the polution.
Clearly the DPF's built into the cars are not doing enough.
