Hi All,
The engine management light came on my car about 10 months ago (TT 3.2 DSG). Took it to the garage, was told it was just a sensor, don't worry, they will sort it out when the MOT is next due.
Drove it for the next 10 months without any problems at all.
Decide I want to sell her once the MOT is done as I need to upgrade to a bigger car (TTs aren't good if you've got 2 kids and a dog).
Garage says crank shaft sensors are faulty, they replace them. Engine management light goes out.
I sell the car.
A week on I get a text from the buyer saying that the engine needs to come and and the chain has to be replaced and it will cost £2600.00 to fix.
I'm gutted, I spent nearly £1500.00 getting her in mint condition for sale.
Where do I stand legally?
Any thoughts and opinions appreciated.

You'll get two sorts of answers here.
You'll get the standard PH response (it will be here very soon) telling you to tell the buyer to 'jog on', it's a private sale, yadda yadda.
But if you were the buyer, and discovered such an expensive fault in a car you've just purchased, it would be 'take him to court', etc, etc.
Plus, you must, and this is the law, go round to his house and hammer frozen sausages into his lawn.
So you're going to do a lot of sifting to get any sense out of what is to follow.

Could just say you are sorry that things have turned out this way but you honestly had no idea anything was wrong and best of luck fixing it as cheap as you can.Its how it is sometimes - its just real bad luck and the buyer must be gutted.

More details? Why does it need to come out and the chain replaced? Are they saying it's related to the sensors you got changed? Irrelevant really, just interested.Are they angry / aggressively seeking compensation or to return the car?
No he's a nice chap and has sent me a couple of texts which I haven't replied to yet.

It's not as if I knew it needed expensive repairs and therefore I decided to sell her.
She's running like a new car (50k miles on the clock) and I've only been relaying what my mechanic has been telling me.

It's drives / pulls like new.
If you google "crank shaft sensor audi tt v6" etc, most of the results suggest it's a chain issue.
Ah right - so he viewed the car and agreed to buy it on the proviso you sorted the EML?
He probably thinks you just bodged something up to get the sale done - I bet he is very upset. I think he will be crying his eyes out right now knowing how much more money he has to spend on the car of his dreams. But YOU ripped him off. YOU mugged him off. Shame on you!
