Hi all, im making myself paranoid with all the noises my car makes.
Just bought a fabia vrs pd130, on 100k miles.
The turbo sounds a lot louder than my previous diesel car, the hissing is very prominent and makes a very slight siren noise on acceleration and a more obvious siren noise when letting off the throttle.
Above is an example of what it sounds like, should i be concerned about the turbos health?? Its more obvious when cold but you can still hear the siren noise quietly when warm (windows open)

My vw Jetta 2.0 tdi makes the same noise. Got the car as a motorway muncher for work. Bought it over 4 years ago and it's gone from 48k miles to 100k miles without problem. I just make sure the oil is changed regularly I.e. Every 8k miles and treat the car with respect. Hopefully it will keep going.

It performs perfectly well. I have heard that VW and audi were replacing them under warranty once but if they work like they should then they stopped replacing them.
I rarely take mine as high as 3k rpm and it only ever gets full throttle for brief periods. I might be worried over nothing but I think a gentle life can only helps it's lifespan.

The hoses seem ok although im not sure if ive checked them all.the airbox is standard but the air filter could do with being replaced, would a dirty air filter cause any noise as above?
Is there anyway this is just the normal noise for the turbo?
I don't know about the Fabia VRS specifically but on most cars a mechanic could whip off the compressor intake hose and inspect / check the shaft for excessive play well within half an hour. If there isn't excessive play and the turbo has a healthy oil supply you can in all likelihood be confident that it has tens of thousands of miles of service left.
Can't hear anything out of the ordinary. Any smoke when driving, if so what colour is it? Run your finger along the boot of the car, any oily residue? If no to both and the car runs fine then you've got no problem. Are you certain it's just the turbo making those noises, alernator/aircon/powers steering whines a bit too.

So that owl/siren type noise when he lets off the throttle sounds normal you would say?? Dont believe it smokes and if it does its blackGassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
