Deposit down on a BMW 335...mechanic said steer clear...
Discussion
Chaps, I've put a deposit down on a 335 auto coupe, '06 with 70,000 miles on the clock. I'll be getting an extended warranty for about 350 quid a year for peace of mind, however two separate mechanics that I use (one of which asked his son about them who works in a BMW dealer) said that I shouldn't touch them with a barge pole.
I'll be fine with the extended warranty right??
Mods: I posted this thread in two places but GG gets a lot more traffic.

I was looking into one of these a while back and didn't discover too many reliability issues. The engine is common to a lot of the BMW fleet from the time, so it's not like it's a low production run unit.
One thing you should take into account however is that warranties are far from faultless - I got one with a used Focus many moons ago, and upon reading it was impressed with the amount of stuff they'd carved out (and I'm a lawyer...).

Perhaps they're perfectly reliable, and the mechanics are just trying to look after their jobs. After all, if everyone bought a perfectly reliable car, then the mechanics wouldn't have any work.
Did they suggest you buy a 10 year old Renault Avantime instead?
No, an E46 M3! Did they suggest you buy a 10 year old Renault Avantime instead?
It's an 8 year old BMW with slightly low milage.
Assuming you did all the basic checks on paperwork, service history and general car condition then you should be fine.
Any 8 year old car is going to have a few glitches.
Expect to spend 10% of the purchase price in the first year on stuff like brakes, tyres, clutch, tangle line etc.

They're the only two cars I told him I was looking at so it's probably the lesser of two evils in his mind. Is there anything else with a cracking 6 pot that offers as good a drive as these two cars and is more reliable for £10-£12k?Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
