Fastest point to point car?
Discussion
OK so here's an interesting one, and no doubt a question likely to split opinion hugely...
What is the fastest point to point, real world driving, quickest car?
I would like to nominate two cars (and admit huge bias):
In all conditions - 911 turbo (I can personally vouch for the 997 turbo and can only imagine the 991 to be better).
In the dry - the Mercedes AMG 55k range of cars - E55 and SL55 being the most least heavy (I can't even say lightest as they're all bloody heavy).
So the 911 turbo - AWD, reasonably nimble and small, and immensely powerful with huge torque low down. This car is IMO tough to beat in real world as the traction, especially in the wet - even after 6 years of ownership - still shocks me every time. It simply grips and grips. There is nothing I can think of that I would imagine being able to drive quicker in on the roads.
The 55k AMG - in the wet, a micra is quicker. In the dry, I can not think of a car I have driven that would be able to keep up - 911 turbo included. The torque at idle is immense - this car allows the driver to take advantage of every opportunity to make safe progress through traffic and is losing to very few supercars even in a straight line.
I have however only driven a limited number of cars, so my view above is from a limited scope of cars so I would be really interested to know what you think would be quicker.

Silly car would have to be the R500 Caterham or whatever the latest spec one is - great handling and lightening acceleration plus narrow so B road pace is more comfortable.
I would imagine the MTM C6 RS6 750bhp model would be hard to beat 5ltr V10 bi turbo
Jag XFR-S is pretty good fun.

Depends upon the road. Fast open A road? Tight lumpy bumpy B road? Singletrack road with grass growing down the middle? Urban environment with speed humps and other crap to negotiate? How brave or stupid is the driver? The car is probably the least important variable in this equation.
This has been done to death...
All we need are the comments suggesting an Impreza with 280bhp is faster point to point than some hugely grippy/sorted supercar with 930bhp. Then some comment about the Impreza being easier to drive, and that's why it's quicker. Then some comment about crater covered B-roads.

Peugeot 208 Pikes Peak ? Hardly a real world production car, may as we'll include Mr Hamiltons current F1 steer.
My money would be on the Nissan GTR, quickly followed by a Vauxhall Astra diesel van. In white ofcourse.
Didn't realise it had to be production car.My money would be on the Nissan GTR, quickly followed by a Vauxhall Astra diesel van. In white ofcourse.
How would a Nissan GTR would be quicker than a Veyron?

An interesting concept.
An SL55 is not a quick "point to point car" either.
It definitely is, though it's obviously not meant for B road blasting. It'll lose out to a sharper, faster car on those roads - but then you wouldn't want to tour Europe two up with luggage in a highly tuned Catherham either. An SL55 is not a quick "point to point car" either.
