Selling a car... Best exposure : numpty ratio?

I have been given the joyous task of selling my mums Merc SLK as it just doesn't get used. (She does 3k a year and has two cars, yet wonders where I get it from?!? )

Anyway, I'm debating the best place to advertise. Auto trader seems like the obvious option, but last time I sold a car I got far more interest on eBay. However, it seems like eBay is now solely populated by nob-ends, so that leaves the PH classifieds. I'm just concerned that it's not really a car PH'ers will be looking for, so there won't be a lot of interest.

Have dallied with selling on FB and gumtree. Holy st. I'm not doing that again!

Advertise it anywhere but when someone calls simply put on an 'automated voice' and request that they spell the word 'ASK' before they are put through.

Thickos who know they are thick will hang up immediately and the thickos who are too thick to know they are thick will reply 'AKS'. At which point your automated voice informs them that they are too thick to be put through and you hang up.



I'm about to sell a BMW in central London and I'm dreading the absolute chimps that this car will attract. The fact that I know that I am completely intolerant of these punters means I'll probably bottle it and do a SoR.

Just sold a car via ebay, and one that would attract twunts.

Really not a problem, just judge over the phone whether they are someone who you want to deal with. Ignore stupid offers.

A filter which automatically ends the call when the words "last price" are spoken would be a good idea too.

Recent to sold a Corsa VXR ... Almost 3yrs old, 8k miles, full VSH, immaculate ... Had no joy with eBay or auto trader or PH, literally no interest at all, priced very reasonably and ready to go.

Put it on gumtree, had a call within 6hrs, small time dealer, came and viewed the car the following day and transferred the cash on his laptop there and then ... Job done, zero numpties and no hassle ... I was shocked, esp looking at some of the adverts on there and the spelling etc...

Seems like you got off lightly.

I usually put it on gumtree as well as Auto Trader and the local rag.

Every single time i've put cars on gumtree some baldy wide boy turns up with his 'mechanic' friend to pick holes in it.

Either that or i get messages offering me 2500 football programmes from 1974 -2004 or a bunch of likely stolen electrical goods.

I guess it sort of depends on the car. I've found Gumtree is very good for cheap stuff at the bottom end of the market. Autotraders gets you the biggest exposure but its not cheap to advertise. PH is more specialist. eBay is probably the quickest way to sell.
