VED and engine conversions ?

Insurance always gets covered int his circumstance "Still a XXX on the log book" but with the RX8 thread and pondering engine conversions in general, was just wondering what would happen to VED due in the event of engine changes, i.e. if an RX8 had an engine from a Golf fitted, does it just retain its RX8 VED band (i.e. max for post 2006 examples) or the Golfs more favourable one ? the CO2 figure wouldnt be avavilable for that combination so its neither, bet they just default to the higher one !
Suppose it applies for any conversion, usually the capacity/emissions goes up in most circumstances as is the whole point of a conversion for most, but I suppose if you had a 1.4 supermini with a dead engine and put a 1,2 in it to get it going would you get a lower banding.
There is the current CO2 bandings and the pre 2001 engine size one as well.
