Traders and new no-disc road tax change?
Discussion
I buy and sell the odd car and van during the year as a side-line to our fleet work.
At present I will simply tax the vehicle at the post office and retain the V5 for the short time that I will own the vehicle without adding my name to the list as is the case with lots of small traders.
Does anyone know if there will be any way to carry on doing this after the change over? I can't see any reference to it on the Gov site or in search.
I do have the proper traders insurance etc and this will be a bit pointless if vehicles cannot be taxed.

Here you go,
https://www.gov.uk/trade-licence-plates
"Trade licence plates can save you time and money if you’re in the motor industry - you won’t have to register and tax every vehicle temporarily in your possession. You need to apply to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for a trade licence to be able to use trade plates.
"You can apply for a trade licence if you’re either a motor trader or a vehicle tester."

What if, say, you were a small trader who didnt have a forecourt or premises, as in, roadside type sales?
It's the usual thing - you're either a trader or you're not. Size of operation makes no difference.Mind you, if you've got a set of trade plates for use on cars from your drive at home it could get a bit "interesting" when HMRC roll up with an income tax investigation and you try to deny being a "trader"!

You are unable to legally drive around on Trade Plates.
The whole purpose of the trade plates is to let the dealer get on with his business, including customer test drives. But you are right insofar as a trader can't legally set off on holiday in his "stock" unless the car is properly taxed and registered in the normal way.As has been said it is not possible to use trade plates as these are solely for use within the trade for that purpose only meaning the vehicle cannot be used for any SDP purpose, my insurance covers SDP and many small traders use their stock as personal transport for short periods, just wondered whether the Government had taken this into account?

I doubt it.I expect their view is: if the trader is using the car for SDP then it should be registered in his name - which if that could be done instantly online might be reasonable but as soon as the DVLA get involved, things take weeks.
