Just read a thread on SP&L where some poor bloke was asking advice on behalf of his wife, who after a moment of carelessness, got nabbed at 40 in a 30. And the number of self righteous a
holes berating him saying he should take her licence off her and that she clearly wasn't a careful driver otherwise she wouldn't have sped in the first place etc. was astounding.
We all speed sometimes right? Okay in a 30 it's a bit more dodgy because of the higher risk of pedestrians being about etc. etc. and personally 30 is a speed limit I make sure I stick to for this reason. But I would have thought the ph community would be more likely to exceed the speed limits than most given the number of 'hoon' stories exchanged on various threads. So why be judgemental wkers?

Haven't read the original thread, by the sounds of it I dont think I'll bother...It's not hard to do, the way speed limits chop and change on a seemingly weekly basis around my way... moving signs about, 50 now a 40, 40 now a 30, oh, that NSL is now a 20 limit... where did that come from... etc..
A 10 mile stretch can see pretty much every speed limit possible!
I got done for a 50 in a 40, only myself to blame was careless, but it's increasingly hard to keep on top of what the limit is where.
One real world example, There's a huge wide open bit of road that forever was a NSL, then a 50, and two weeks later a 30. then they moved the signs a few hundred yards to extend the 30. then reduced the remaining bit of 50 to a 40.
I'm thinking of just joining the 45mph everywhere brigade. Motorway or outside a school, one speed setting!
This is a case of it happens to someone else tough, but suddenly it happens to you and its a major injustice. Frankly the fact she was on an unfamiliar road and didn't make the effort to know the speed limit wuld count as driving without due care and attention so 3 points for speeding is a let off. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse.

But the signs are there...you just have to be looking for them and not driving around on autopilot. hing and moaning about being caught for speeding is all part of the process - no harm in that.What I think is potentially dangerous for us speeders is having to look for the hidden cameras on gantries above and now on the side of the gantries. They really are hidden and not properly signposted which means you really do spend more time looking at the surroundings than looking at the road ahead and what is going on with cars around you. The M1 and M25 are a real nightmare now. That is really dangerous.

There are a number of stages of grief before acceptance. Yes, almost everybody speeds at some stage. Usually those who are most vocal that "speed kills" can be found cruising along at 35mph in a 30 limit, then 42 in the NSL....
I quite often follow cars with the Speed Kills stickers who pull away from me in the 30s and I catch them back up in the NSLs...

I mean, really? Does this sound like a driver whose reactions in a genuine emergency situation are going to be worth anything? Sounds to me like somebody who, faced with a need to really do a genuine emergency stop (likely, since their hazard perception's Not Exactly Going To Be World Class) is going to flap and fluster and wonder why nobody gave her advance notice so she could prepare herself.

This. Why is it so difficult for people to admit their faults? I've been caught speeding a few times, did I whinge and whine and try to get out of it, no because I was speeding. I agree with the OP on this. Everyone someone posts a speeding thread there seems to be a some sort of feeding frenzy as people pile in. Of course, if you get nabbed, yo differ the consequences. Not all speeding is dangerous, and not all empty roads are deathtraps for a competent driver with a bit of spirit. Of course, the PH "speed matters" branding is now gone.

One of the times I was pissed off that I hadn't noticed that a dual carriageway I used daily had been changed from a 40mph to 30mph limit for a short (400m ish) stretch, but there were signs up so how can anyone else be to blame?
I agree that, in places, speed limits seem arbitrary at best and moronic at worst, but it's up to us to either recognise the limits or take our chances and the consequences that come with it.

In answer to the OP, SP&L is by no means representative of PH and seems to be largely populated by people who think breaking the speed limit makes you worse than Jimmy Saville.
Probably going to get slated by some for this but for example Manchester Police would send you on a driving course (if have not done one in last three years) for 40 in a 30 mph, well actually up to 42 moh in a 30. And get no points for it
So maybe they recognise that everyone does occasionally stray over the limit ? Or recognise that driver education is a better idea ?
Or maybe they are just using it as a easy cash collection scheme by picking people off speeding in areas that drop to 30 mph at times where 40 mph would be perfectly safe ?
