Very economical but interesting car...

My commute is 60 miles a day and I want a car that is very economical, but has some character and is a bit interesting. My current Yaris is getting a bit long in the tooth and I would like something that gives a genuine 55mpg+, will seat 4 and will cost no more than £9,000.
Preferably I would like a car that is small, has not travelled around the world a few times and is, as I said before interesting.
What does the combined wisdom on PH suggest?

Lupo 3L, hilarious to drive 1000km range & or 85 mpg plus,
Have just gotten back from Belfast-Scotland-Dorset on one tank flat out literally & still a quarter left. It only has a 34l tank.
Have just checked & it has officially recorded its worst ever mpg for a long journey I think there may have been a headwind! of 4.7L 100km & that included taking the "alternative a75 route" I beat the satnav by almost an hour too. It was pinned the whole way back bar the roadworks. So 60mpg is the worst it will ever do!
The trip up it did 3.4L/100km at a more sensible but still brisk speed on the motorway which is about 83mpg

Thanks for all the replies. The Mistubishi, Audi A2 and VW Lupo are great, but too old. Love the Honda CRZ but it not economical enough.
The Volvo looks great, hadn't thought of going Swedish!
The Alpina would be lovely, but in my price range it would have a higher mileage than my existing car.
One other thought is red and Italian. What about a diesel Alfa Romeo MiTo or Giulietta? Does anyone have experience of owning one. I actually prefer the looks of the Mito over the Giulietta.

Seat Ibiza FR TDi. Purchased a 3yr old one recently well within your budget. Ticks the boxes you have for fuel economy and seating 4, whilst remaining small. It has the VAG 2 litre 140 TDi more commonly found in the Golf/A3/Leon etc. size cars, meaning it will do 0-60 in sub 9 seconds (Seat 'claims' 8.2).
If you can put up with a fairly complicated stereo, it's a a very economical and marginally more interesting everyday car.

Maybe try the mito with the twin air petrol engine. If you keep it out of the revs, you can get 50+mpg.The Volvo looks great, hadn't thought of going Swedish!

Low mileage punto with same engine is about £6k. Keep the change and spend it on fuel or crack.
