Don't these things always happen at the worst time? My car insurance is up for renewal on Tuesday and a couple of days ago some dozy old pensioner reversed her car into me so there is now an open claim. The easiest thing to do is leave the insurance with my current provider I guess but their quote is now £500 more than most well known competitors. The problem I have is that most online quote systems ask about accidents but assume they have been settled and as such at the moment I feel like the quotes are a bit misleading because I can't say it hasn't been settled yet. I know its not my fault though. Whats the best thing to do in this kind of situation? state it wasn't your fault but reduce your no claims by 2 years to get a reliable quote or something else?

Do it the old fashioned way and phone up for some quotes? Then you can explain the situation and let them worry about what to do when they're entering your details.

Just going through this myself, just tell them you have an open claim, they then charge you more money and tell you that you can claim some back when the claim is settled..........

Thats the problem though you don't know how much they will give you back so kind of makes the quotes useless. I think I am going to have to go down the route of calling people which is annoying because its so much simpler online.

Clearly it's not much simpler online in this instance, hence the thread.

Do the online quotes with the claim outstanding and with it settled. Then go with the insurer who is cheapest with it settled but when you set up the policy do it with the claim in and pay whatever premium they want for that scenario.

That way, when it's all settled in your favour and you get your premium back you'll have paid the lowest amount in total for the year.

Of course, it could all go to tits up if the old dear turns out to be uninsured and your claim goes against you...

My wife crashed 2 weeks before renewal (her fault). The company she was with bumped the renewal quote up. So we shopped around and saved money on our previous years policy, and they accepted an estimate for the comple accident cost (about £3k).

3 years no claims lost, excess reduced from £250 to £100. Cheaper policy. Go figure
