A variation on the 'what £5k estate'...;)

My parents are finally tired of their 1995 Mk1 Mondeo (owned from new with c 80k miles).

They want a decent sized estate to be used as a second car, garden rubbish to the tip car etc.

Their main car is saab 9-5. They've looked at 9-3 and 3 series estates, but decided they're too small in the boot - as well as the need for decent load for the tip, they also need a big enough boot for 2 golf bags to fit easily.

Their 9-5 is a lightly uprated aero (Hirsch I think), so ideally they'd like a decent amount of performance in the estate.

So comfortable, large, relatively quick and not high maintenance.

So far the ideas are

1. 9-5 estate (Dame edna vintage - no idea what these are like though)
2. e39 or e61
3. MkIV Mondeo

Any ideas?
thanks

This pretty much nails it. 3k would pick up a decent example.

7th Gen Honda Accord is big, comfy, well equipped, ultra reliable and pretty quick in 2.4 guise.

Quite.
That's why I deleted it because I subsequently thought it in bad taste, and can only apologise.
Doesn't make me an asshole though.

You're quick off the mark though, I'll give you that.

Anyway, my proper contribution - I'd also say Forester, although in normal n/a mode not particularly nippy.

Well done for your apology, perhaps I was quick to judge you but your comment just "hit" me from the screen as something really inappropriate.
I hope the OP will except your apology as well and we could move past this.

In my defence, my elderly parents call themselves 'The Stiffs', and it's just our family humour.

Apologies to the OP for taking this off track. smile

Kia Ceed - chain cam petrol engines, 1.6 so might be considered underpowered if not don't mind dawdling, massive boot

Pug 307sw - massive boot, nifty seat configurations, cambelt change about 7 years according service schedule.

Definitely the V70. Avoid the passat, nice car but plagued with problems.

Saab + Mondeo = Volvo

Its certainly the logical choice for them. More interesting than VW too.

If all its going to be used is trips to the tip, b&q etc then why change? What is an E class going to do better than the car they already have? Seems a waste of money which could be better spent on a holiday or change the main car to somwthig better.
