Didn't realise they were so bad (18s) until I got some 16s. Wow, cheaper, lighter, nicer turn in (also slightly narrower at 215 vs 235). Better mpg, just a nicer place to be on a bumpy road. And oddly, feels more planted at speed - how is this?
Why did the first owner tick the 'fashion statement' box and go for these f
ked up abomination wheels? At a grand extra, to make the car worse. Bah!
Got it all pre approved on the insurance although it took quite an effort to explain these are base model steelies, not top spec alloys. Dunno why it took more than one email though.

I agree with the principle, larger wheels do look better but for me that's the only plus.
Constantly worrying about kurbing them, rubbish ride quality and expensive tyre cost mean for me I prefer smaller wheels.
My next car purchase is likely to be an ST estate and as it will be mainly driven by my wife I'd like to pull all the badges off it and stick some steel wheels on it.

Your experience is fairly typical. As far as I can see the only benefits to ultra low profiles are the subjective 'image', and sharper turn-in. Everything else (the stuff that really matters) is worse.
16" wheels are large enough for excellent brakes.
I don't even think they look that good when they go down to 30-25 profile ala BMW M-Sport.
