Bought a Car with a private plate

Hello All!

I'm buying a car with a private plate which I want to remove (private plates just don't do it for me). Never done anything regarding plates before.
What do I do and will I get the cars original plates back automatically?

I had a crappy private plate on my z4 which just made it look dated, wrote to the DVLA, requested for and age related plate, paid a fee, new v5 came through a few weeks later.

Apologies for the thread hijack but is there any way to do multiple reg transfers in one go? Basically I've just bought a new car, and want to transfer the reg of the old car to my mum's car, then transfer the plate on hers to the new car. Is there a straightforward way to do this?

What's the car and plate? I noticed yesterday my old car is up for sale with one of my old plates on... and I'd love the plate back.

You can request DVLA to scrap the plate and return the car back to it's original number which then becomes non transferable and there is no charge for it.
