How long does it take to find out if a car is a write off?

my car was scraped couple of weeks back by another driver ( claiming off his insurance ) my insurer dealt with it all and have instructed Quindell to deal with the claim, my curtesy car came yesterday and the approved engineers picked mine up to repair/assess ..

My car is only worth around £1200, so it wont take a lot to write it off even though its only light cosmetic damage... I was just wondering if anyone else has had experience in this and how soon they found out if their car was a write off or not.. I thought I might have heard something today but I never ?

Probably about a week, usually takes 2 or 3 days to organise an assessor and the a day or so to get the result, once its written off if the 3rd party insurer has admitted liability they will want you out of that hire car asap, is the courtesy car from the bodyshop or a credit hire car from the accident management company ?

Once an asseser has declared it a total loss,today's technology will record it as a total loss within minutes on the HPI system.......!

If it's a non-fault claim then your insurance company will be in no hurry to get the rental car back. This happened to me recently: my car was declared a total loss based on a couple of phone calls. The write off process took a couple of days. However I had the rental car for about two weeks! Possibly longer. Simply because someone else's money was paying for it. My insurer could bill the other driver's company for the cost of the rental. Ergo no-one seemed that bothered about it. Plus if it's Enterprise or someone car rental is pretty cheap.
