Private plate retention question

With a private car and a private plate
Is there a quick way to retain and sell the vehicle at same time?

If not how long does a retention take, I.e if I took to a dvla centre and what's the process?

Alternatively what's the process for transfer onto another car if taking forms down to dvla centre?

Do I get the original registration straightaway to put back onto the car but wait for v5?

Just sold my car and put the plate on retention.

The plate was sorted in about a week and then it took about a week longer to get the documents back.

All DVLA local centres closed at the end of 2013.

You should get the papers back after a week (hopefully) and then you can put the original registration back in place.

They quote up to 6 weeks to turn it around but it's often done in a couple of weeks. The last time I did mine the tax disc got lost in the post and they wouldn't do anything to resolve until 30 days had gone past from them posting it.

It is possible to get them to change owners and transfer plates at the same time but they struggle with the simple jobs and I don't want to risk losing my plate so I don't chance it.

Yes, whatever you do make sure you put the plate on retention a few weeks BEFORE you sell the vehicle.

Agree with others - mine took just over a week to get the log book, plate transfer and tax disc.. That was over 3 weeks ago.

Don't forget to add fee for retention - £105, new plates probably £25 and then if you are lucky - insurance charges you another £30 for the admin to change the reg and issue you a piece of paper!!

Really is the biggest hassle to have a cherished plate in this country...

Yes I keep forgetting its a pain but thought I read somewhere it can be retained and transfer ownership done at same time?
