My brother in law has a 1991 Volvo 440 automatic. He's owned it from new and its done 13,000 miles. Unfortunately however its been parked in central London all its life and has not been loved - no major damage, but certainly not in the condition normally thought of as being commensurate with its mileage.

The MOT is due at the end of August, and my brother in law has taken a decision to get rid of the car before investing in a further MOT/tax etc. It seems a pity to scrap it, and personally I'm a bit worried that that eBay will involve too much hassle for my (non car savvy) brother in law. Any one know any alternatives?

Might be worth looking at putting it in a local car auction with no reserve, might get a hundred or so for it

Is the car sound/ what risk of not passing MOT?

Madness not to get it done as you will get so much more from people who want to run the car instead of scrap it.

Thanks for the replies - the car should pass its MOT (only done 100 miles or so since the last MOT ...) - but Volvo 440's do not seem to be worth much - with or without MOT...

For £40 get the MOT heck it would be madness not to.

One owner from new every MOT every service history and a totally fresh 12 months MOT no advisories.

Little or No MOT puts off a chunk of your potential market place. It also removes a tool for a buyer to haggle you down as full MOT and no advisories is a comforting place to be.

Any car with an MOT is a years motoring, so worth £365 (£1 a day) if running and safe. A low mileage car with history is worth £150 more. I'd try www.autosh!te.com (replace the ! with an I), or a Volvo owners forum. or the local paper.

With an MOT he might get a few hundred for it, without one he might as well scrap it. Who's going to buy a 23 year old car with the MOT just about to expire?

What engine is it? I'll ask a few people near me as I'm in London.

I'm tempted, just because it's something different. Even though I have no need and I'm looking to move on a Mondeo.

As everyone else said, get the MOT and just reflect it in the price so he's not out of pocket. Every time I see an ad saying 'No (or short) MOT but it'll fly through honest gov', it's onto the next car thank you very much. My instant reaction, and that of most buyers at that end of the market I suspect, will be very much along the lines of 'If it can pass an MOT why doesn't it have one? Must be a lemon... Avoid.'

Ebay, 99p start, no reserve.

It'll go for more if clean, with the MOT and a decent advert.

Agreed.
  • Value with MOT - a couple of hundred quid, maybe a bit more on a good day.
  • Value without MOT - 99p. Or less.

I agree with getting the mot.

Then gumtree has always worked well for me.

Get it mot'd. It doesn't even have to pass. The fail sheet will put minds at ease.

Call me a Luddite but autotrader always does the trick for me.

£9.99 if it's under £1k. In recent years I've sold two bangers successfully on there very quickly.

Fiesta cash in my hand within 2hrs of the add going live. Audi A4 took a little longer at just under 24hrs. Clean it up nicely, take some good pics and write a nice simple add. As above a years MOT will make a big difference.
