Hi chaps, i've recently sold my e46 m3 and am having real trouble trying to replace it. I've looked at all sorts, sheds, convertibles, saloons etc etc bit just dont fancy anything i've seen so far. There is a lovely 645 up for sale locally , 04 plate with 80k on it. I'm really interested in this car! Are there any problems/ issues i need to look for on the test drive?
Its fully loaded and at a good price. I'm not fussed about mpg etc. Am i mad looking at one of these? Thanks for the advice
Simon

Check out for valve stem seal wear, ie, on a test drive, if you sit at traffic lights for while, when you set off look for a little puff of blue oil smoke.

Other than that, I don't think there's any problems that would cause big headaches.

Google 645 cooling pipe issue, not a big problem but to be aware of
Check for auto box leaks from pan
As stated check for valve wear, its pretty obvious
Oil leaks are pretty common, rockers and oil cooler housing,
Make sure radio and screen works obvious but can be an issue
I wouldn't want one with active steering as ridiculously expensive to fix and feels odd

Thanks guys. I'll be getting a 12 month warranty with this car , will these issues be covered?

Everything I've mentioned is wear and tear so most likely not.

But I can assure you if you can afford to maintain an m3 e46 then 645 will be a breeze.

Oil leaks gave been an issue on mine. Not covered under the BMW mondial warranty though.
To be fair the leaks aren't terrible, just a bit messy.
Lot of car for the money these days

Are those wheels a BMW option or aftermarket? They look the biz.

I bought a 645 recently and it is such an effortless car to drive. Perfectly sedate when you want it to be and still has the grunt for when the mood takes you. The exhaust note is simply addictive when you activate kickdown but you can't really hear much when driving normally so you won't get a headache from the constant drone which some cars suffer from.

Bringing the car home I did a 300 mile drive mostly on cruise at 65mph and the trip computer said I was returning 33mpg. I know people who buy these cars don't care about economy but it's nice to know what's possible and realistic.

If you are looking for a GT style car then you won't beat it for the money. If you want something engaging like an M3 then it's maybe not for you.

Great car. I used to work for BMW about 10 years ago, and spent some time in a 645i manual. Made a great car even greater IMHO. The manual box really lets you exploit the engine much better, and is so much more fun.

Unfortunately, 95% are auto. Boo.

The BMW warranty doesn't cover oil leaks? That's rather poor.

Aye, I've had the m3 experience so can move on from that now. I'm very happy with a GT, especially one with a nice turn of pace. Ideally I'd want a manual but don't think there's much chance of that..

As I mentioned, I've looked at all sorts but can't get anything I fancy, especially after the m3. A couple of sheds I've looked at have been poo-pooed by the mrs (she's a snob) so she will have to put up with something like this instead!!
Hopefully it won't be bork'tastic!!

Not sure if you could stretch to the 650? Marginally better inside, bit more power and supposedly better economy.

I owned one for 18m and only sold it due to finding my dream car but fortunately it was sold to my parents so I still get to go in from time to time. Never had any problems with it, fantastic cars and probably the best all round car I've ever bought.

I'd love a 650 but looking at the prices they are at least £3k more than this one. Hard to justify really.

Hopefully it's not a dog when I drive it tomorrow...

Have to say mine wasn't the cheapest out there last year. But a years BMW warranty sorted a few bits and I got new brakes in the deal too.
There are some bargains around now but the usual 'it's a £60k car' rule applies!

I have had a 645ci for almost a year. I love the look, the way it drives, the engine and that it still looks reasonable modern. It is also a lot lighter than you`d think, considerably less my previous E46 330d touring

Mine was a one owner car and it`s still been blighted with the usual things, including oil leak from the rocker cover & gearbox. Other than that its been pretty good.

Dont expect much more than 24mpg though (average that is)

Which isn`t bad.

Bang for your buck (in my case £7k) is good. People always comment on how much they like it.

I`ll be getting a 650i next
