Ok,

Situation is a close relative, has a 51 plate Renault Kangoo Trekka 4x4 in decent condition, with 62,000 miles, but the other day the cam belt snapped (at low speed)....and has damaged the engine, but they don't know how badly yet.

They only paid £1800 for it 4 years ago, and reckon it is probably worth just over 1k in fully working order....long MOT etc..

So, any Renault gurus on here have any idea what damage could have been caused, and likely cost to fix...at a specialists...not main dealer prices.

I suppose if they could get it sorted for around £400/500 it would be worth fixing, but is that being over optimistic?

The moral of the story is if your car is approaching 60/70k get the cambelt changed, a stitch in time and all that.

They live in Rossendale, North Manchester, so does anyone know any decent garages in the locality, Bury/Burnley/Rochdale etc, who might be able to help?

Cheers?

WR.

Mods. Kindly leave this in GG please.....

If its low speed with them engines you may get away with fitting a new belt and the engine will run. That what I would be doing.

Even if its done damage at low speed will have bent a few valves easy engine to remove the head to gain access to them. Would get them to fit a new belt turn the engine over by hand and see if anything is restricting the movement if not start it up and see what happens.

If it has done damage to the valves there is only 8 if its an 8 valve engine most case they are with all new gaskets, timing belt etc would be around 500 quid to do.

I'd go with scrapper engine and a new belt on that one while it's out just so lightening doesnt strike twice etc

Right so you just stick a new 2nd hand lump in without even checking to see if the engine in it is damaged. Align the marks up stick a new belt on turn it over by hand if no contact is made start it and see if it runs.

These engine can at low speeds not cause any damage to the valves cheaper then sticking another engine in. Heck even fixing the current engine is cheaper than a another engine.

If its a 16v it's bent valves without a doubt

You'll need a cam locking kit to align it back up anyway, so may as well find a decent garage to sort what's there rather than buying a 2nd hand lump which you won't be able go change the belt on anyway.

Thanks for the helpful replies so far, he did say it was a 16 valve engine.......
