Looking to replace some h1 halogen bulbs with some led ones.

It's low level exterior lighting on a large camper, want to reduce the amount of juice that is currently consumed

Will the LEDs in a enclosure get too hot and fail, I've heard various tales of this happening

To put it bluntly whoever told you this was talking out of their backside... Halogen bulbs get to hundreds of degrees, I know, I've got the burn to show it, and LEDs get mildly warm.

It'll be fine.

If you mean fine as in light will be shooting all over the show cos youre using a reflective unit not designed for led tech then that's great, otherwise Id stay clear.

I suggest you re-read and think about the OP's post before spouting your grammatically flawed opinion. The key phrase from the OP is

The implication I understand from this is the lighting is not headlamps, in which case, the spread of light is not of the greatest concern.

Cheers

I understand that LEDs run cool, but in an enclosed environment will the bulb cook itself (melt any solder)

No

In my bike I have a 5W CREE LED sidelight bulb sitting less than an inch away from a 55W HID burner which gets waaaaaay hotter than a halogen bulb

You'll be fine

LEDs can suffer from overheating, which is why a number of the high power units are fan cooled, including the new Focus headlights, iirc.

A 5 watt cree led has nowhere hear the light output of a 55w halogen.

It's not the LED that's going to cause heat issues, it's the proximity to the heat source...

Hang on a minute...There is a big difference between OEM 'LED headlights' and 'LED H1 replacement bulbs' like you get on eBay.
LED headlights need a driver circuit, which is essentially a box containing a power supply. Contrary to what has been said above, these LED bulbs do run very hot indeed and a suitable heatsink (and often a fan).
I eagerly await the first LED headlight kit from China. It'll be just like HID kits all over again - but they aren't there quite yet in terms of brightness (very near though).

I think the OP is referring to the LED H1 replacement bulbs that you can get on eBay. The cheap ones are rubbish. In fact they're just as rubbish as the LED solar garden lights you can buy.
You need to buy one with a genuine CMD Cree type emitter. These will be much much better. They will have a built in power board (the more powerful ones have an external box) and heatsink. They do run quite warm, although nothing like a Halogen bulb.
