When you can buy and race a Formula 4 race car, including entry to the race championship and the engine serviced for the year, for about £40,000.

Actually racing and you can pretend you are Lewis Hamilton.

http://www.formula4.com/costs.aspx

Here is a Formula 4 comprehensively showing a 911 turbo S how its done.

Now where did i leave that £40k ....

Initial capital cost
New MSV F4-013 car complete less engine
(all available cars are sold)

£32,750

Annual running costs
Engine serviced lease for a season/5000 miles £4,875
Championship registration fee £785
Race event entry fee £595
Yokohama slick and wet tyres per set £560

I just saw its plus VAT, so lets say £50,000

Obviously there will be associated running costs / repairs, but there would be on a track-day car too.

Unless i am completely missing something, which is entirely possible.

The car is bought and owned for that cost, yes you would have to lease the engine every year. However if i could afford £50k on a track day car, the leasing/running costs of the engine probably wouldn't put me off.

I wouldn't (couldn't) spend 50k on a track day car, but the market must exist otherwise cars like the KTM X-Bow etc. wouldn't exist.

Your forgetting the market for stuff like the x bow etc is for people that have several cars already and can afford to blow 50k on it. Got to most track days across the country and 90% of the car will be made up of the following in this order

hot hatches stuff like the clio cup/pug 106/mgzr 160/ puma etc
mx5s/ mr2/ bmw for rwd
kit cars covers stuff like the westfields/ mev etc excluding 50k x-bow never seen one on track.

the rest is covered by odd ball cars then 50k toy.

How many sets of tyres are required for the 24 races at £560 per set? How many race entry fees are required for the 24 races at £595 per entry?

What is the probability of crashing on a trackday against crashing during a race? What are the financial consequences of such a crash? Can you insure race cars in the same way you can trackday cars?

What is the depreciation of a race car after a year of racing against a road going car having done a couple of trackdays?

I suspect you're massively under-estimating the cost of running the race car.

Rough addage in Motorsport - to run a car for a season, simply add the cost of the car on again.

Obviously doesnt work exactly in all cases but if a car is £100k then you'll not have much change from the same amount once youve finished.

Add in -
Organisation time, loading and unloading, additional kit, trailers, tow vehicles, running costs with fuel, travelling etc. Hotels, food and expenses. Weekend Warriors if you need help, fine if you like having mates help but this all costs otherwise. All this before the car turns a wheel...

Prep work, repairs and set-up changes. If you are setting it up yourself then youll need a flat patch somewhere.
Laptops and download equipment.
Spare wheels for the wets/ spare slicks etc, spare parts - bodywork such as noses, wings, uprights, wishbones.

Woe betide you hit something or damage an engine or box. Insurance usually runs into the £1000's and doesnt cover everything.

£32,750 presumably less paint, datalogging system, transponder, upgrades and upsells which 'all the fast guys have'

Annual running costs
Engine serviced lease for a season/5000 miles £4,875 'the quick guys' probably have more than one a season
Championship registration fee £785 Plus 400 for ARDS/race license, 1200+ for racewear and HANS
Race event entry fee £595 x number of weekends
Yokohama slick and wet tyres per set £560 'all the fast guys' probably use a new set most weekends. Plus at least two extra set of wheels for wets and test slicks

I just saw its plus VAT, so lets say £50,000

Plus 300 for pre-event testing every time, 500 per day for technical support (3 days per race weekend), 600 per day tuition so you aren't last every single time, transport and storage, fuel, tools, equipment, hotels, repairs, maintenance

I got up to 90k per season. You can guarantee that 'the quick guys' are spending more.

Oh and add to that the fact that for every race weekend you'll be taking at least one day off work so you can deduct number of race weekends x daily rate from your salary and see how easy it'll be to budget 100k for a season's racing.

I'm not saying that I'd advocate spending 40k on a trackday car, indeed I think people that do are normally a bit moronic (with exceptions); I'm only illustrating the huge cost of competing properly compared to the initial cost of a 40k race car.

Plus the fact that the average driver can have a lot of fun on a track day, but an average driver in a formula race is going to be driving round at the back, spending their time trying not to knock the leaders off when they get lapped.......

You haven't factored in the cost of crashing either... doesn't have to be your fault to end up with a destroyed car!
