I bought a second-hand Meriva B in February with just 14k on the clock, and which came with a three-month warranty. After a few weeks, the car developed a significant fault, which was fixed - for free - under the terms of the warranty.

Now with the car out of warranty, a couple of weeks ago the exact same fault re-emerged, revealing that it had not been fixed properly in the original instance.

Given that the problem was first identified and inadequately repaired within the warranty period, does anyone know the rules about whether I should have to pay for the repairs now?

Thanks!

1. What does the warranty say?

2. What is the fault?

3. How old is the car? [Sounds as though it must be out of manufacturer warranty so probably not in the first flush of youth]

If it was fitted with a new part / parts then surely that part has a 12 month warranty?

Thanks for the input.

The car has been with the garage (main dealer) since last Thursday and the paperwork is in a folder in the glovebox (along with the manual), so I don't know the precise wording of the old Warranty.

The initial fault, I was told, was with the power steeering pump which was replaced under that warranty. I have been reassured that this replacement pump is covered by its own a 12 month warranty. Now, with the car itself out of warranty, the exact same symptoms occured again - ie. all the electrics cut out when pulling away from a standing start such as at a red light, and "Code 68" appears on the dash.

This exact same fault is now being blamed on the entire steering rack, rather than the power steering pump. This is why I am worried about whether I'll end up having to pay.

I have asked them to clarify this, but the garage says they just can't say until they have a complete diagnosis. Despite the car having been with them for a week and apparently having been looked at several times, I still have not been given the diagnosis as they are "a little bit stuck" with what the problem is and have escalated the problem to Vauxhall. Apparently all the to-iong and fro-ing that is happening between them and Vauxhall is what is taking all this time.

Car is 60 plate, but still has under 18k on the clock.

Thanks again.

There are of course exceptions I'm sure, but normally you don't get a fresh warranty on a warranty repair part (applies to all sorts of productsm not just cars)

From memory...

If the part was fitted under the original OEM warranty, and this has now expired, you are stuffed.

If it was covered by a third party warranty, then I "think you" will have a valid claim, from the parts supplier.

Now getting the dealer to say it is the same fault as previously sounds like the tricky bit.

Good luck
