Help car advice

Morning all
I dont quite know what to do and could do with some advice.I need a cheapish car (2-3k)for a couple of years to operate as a work vehicle but to also do some of the family stuff.A small to mid size hatch would suit.My wife uses it mainly but on certain days for the NHS she makes house to house calls.I was thinking diesel not because of the better mpg but because I like the way they drive but im worried the constant stop start will kill it.So now im thinking maybe an Audi or Golf 1.8T which will be pretty punchy performance wise but have a larger road tax bill and drink a bit more.
