Subaru BRZ from £22K

SE spec returns to make BRZ ownership even more attainable. Tempted?

A little while ago Subaru confirmed a price cut for the BRZ. But it was only on the SE Lux version, meaning the BRZ started at £24K rather than £25K. It was good rather than brilliant news.

Time for a great deal on a used BRZ?
Time for a great deal on a used BRZ?
Now Subaru has decided to reinstate the BRZ SE and also also applied the £2,500 discount, meaning a manual BRZ is £22,495. A GT86 is £25,110. Interesting... The official line is that 'Subaru UK has expanded its range of affordable BRZ sports cars' and the cars are available in dealers this month.

It will be intriguing to see what this price cut does for BRZ used values. Most in the PH classifieds are the SE Lux models but this standard 2013 BRZ has covered 2,000 miles and is £25K. There's some negotiating power for you now!

Moreover, a saving on list price opens up additional funds for a bit of aftermarket fettling. We'll hope to try a Cosworth BRZ soon and establish if the upgrades are money well spent, but £2,500 would be a very useful kitty to begin with.

I'd rather have a Subaru than a Toyota anyway and I'm sure others think the same. Should help them shift a few more.

Do they offer any other wheel options? All the ones I've seen on the road have those pictured and they really aren't my cup of tea.

Agree on the wheels. They look awful.

I think its the two tone that ruins them, in one colour they look better (if not a little small):

Although I would go aftermarket with something like this:

After spending a lot of time in a GT86 it was only the wheels I didn't like. I even started to like the cheap, typically Japanese interior smile

I find it utterly baffling that Toyota/Subaru sell a sports car with zero wheel options, whereas most similarly priced coupes (Z4/TT) have at least three to four. This is further compounded by the standard wheels looking like ripspeed specials.

There are some 18" gold spokes too, but no info available on the website.

Hopefully, this will lead to significantly more sales. We need more interesting cars on our roads, not just genero-platform FWD hatchbacks.

I know they are trying their hardest to get people interested but the only reason people buy these is because there is a huge lack of cars like this for sale now.

Turn the clocks back ten years you had the s2000, brabus roadster coupe, mazda rx8, Toyota celica, Toyota mr2, Alfa Romeo Brera, fiat barchetta and probably more if you think harder for the same sort of 20-30k price range. Now there's just the mx5, toyubaru br86z and the lotus Elise

Hopefully, yes, but in reality I very much doubt that it will.

I did consider a GT86 last year, but on the test drive it felt rather dull and tinny. Possibly a bit of a one trick pony.

Even the local Toyota dealer has stopped ordering them for the showroom, which might be telling...

arse, that is not the news I was hoping for. I was hoping that the BRZ and/or GT86 would be sufficiently successful to generate a resurgence of small light rwd cars of varying power outputs that I could buy in 10 years when the price drops to peanuts.

a pox on you masses who just want transport or lifestyle statements

I wonder if it's area specific because there appears to be hundreds of the things around here.

Where's the STI?

They're soo slow with everything with this car, 10 years late to the table and still taking their time releasing a new product.

Are they cash strapped at all?

Drove a standard one, and it was a pleasant enough car but just felt gutless. I can't drive around everywhere with the accelerator pinned to the floor, was very disappointed (I tried to be completely unbiased knowing already the 0-60 times, in gear times, etc.).

And doesn't seem right having to spend 20k on a car then 10k on a good load of engine, braking, exhaust, tires/alloy upgrades straight away.

May as well spend £30k and get a good 2nd hand Cayman or something (or even an 1M, etc.)

I was offered a nearly new main dealer demo GT86 for £22k with only 2k miles. This was ages ago too. So good news on the recent discounts.

I doubt it, I don't want to be seen as Mr Negative right now but it has to be said that I've only spotted maybe 3 or 4 BRZs and a dozen GT86s on the road.

When are you planning on buying one? When they are 10 years old circa £3k .....

I don't understand why they don't, I bought a set of Forester rims for mine (which are exactly the same offset and size) and had them sprayed to put winters on, tempted to use the std rims for winters and the 5 spokes as summers as they look much nicer IMHO.

I'm delighted with mine having done >20k miles in the last year, it's a great balanced drive that requires involvement whilst being practical enough to cram the kids in occasionally and a bit of overnight luggage. Running costs are excellent, averaging 38mpg with cheapish servicing (camchain) and latest insurance at £280pa. Only time will tell on the depreciation hit, but for a daily drive for me it's brilliant value for money.
Just because it has a Subaru bloodline has led to be ridiculed by the loyal legacy Subaru turbo buyer of old, who'll hate the lack of turbo torque and instant power that they are used to.
It's totally different car, built for a different market in a different era and should be considered as such. If the Subaru connection didn't exist and it was purely sold as a Toyota, it wouldn't be compared to Subaru turbo performance but viewed as the new Celica in a much more tempered and appreciative light.

Do not have that discussion. That is exactly the point where I went wrong. I should have just signed after my test drive and had a chat with the missus later over dinner hehe

ps

Yep the wheels are dire. Fitting Rotas would be my first days job.

^^ Agreed! And then download a copy of Harris's man maths calculator and show her the results!
