I've spotted a car I'd love to buy and don't want to sell one. Great!

BUT..... I wouldn't have a garage to keep the new one in. :-(

Not sure I could bear having a "Pride & Joy" car sitting outside in the winter.

Am I worrying too much??

Yes you are, it's a car, it won't dissolve, unless it's a British classic, then maybe it will lol

Do you mean out on the road, or do you have a driveway? If the latter, what about something like this:

I park a Turbo S on the street in Lewisham - voted "least peaceful place in the UK."

I used to be precious with my cars, which led me to stressing about them, not using them, and then selling them because i didn't use them. Don't fall into the trap!

Good advice. I should follow it. I should start buying cars covered in dents and scratches so I don't wince or die inside when I find a new one on my car, or pay a lot of money to sort the paintwork out, then it happens again...

I had my motorcycle and bicycle pride and joys in my garage, so when I bought my Porsche 911, it had to live on the driveway.

She was well pampered and always kept with a thick layer of AutoGlym's finest on her, so although initially a bit worried, it turned out that living on the drive for the 4 years I had her was fine.

Once the salt went down on the roads at the beginning of winter, she went under a cover with an Optimate hooked up to the battery. Just ran the cable out from under the garage door.

The cover, I might add - was a nice, bespoke 'breathable' cover, which fitted snugly. I also fitted my own eyelets along the bottom of the cover, so I could bungee strap it underneath too. This way, even when it was windy, the cover was as snug as a second skin. It is important to get the right cover and fit it so it doesn't move. A cheap cover, or one which can move around, will cause damage to the paint.

I then just whipped the cover off every so often, to check all was well (it always was) and run the car up to temperature on the drive - or if the roads had been cleared from salt by a huge rainstorm the day before, then an hour's drive round.

This meant that keeping my P&J outside all year round had no detrimental effects on her at all.

My V40 lives on the driveway and my RS Clio lives in the garage - hardly an impressive pride and joy but it is seldom used so I'd rather it wasn't sat on the driveway where as the V40 is a daily, and a lease so its not as high on the priority list!!

When I lived in the city centre my car took a few dings - two broken mirrors, kids footballs and some unexplained scratches, so if I moved back into a built up area like that again I'd be very worried about leaving any car on the street full time again.

It seems I have fallen into this trap with my Mini GP, soon to be up for sale for this very reason .

One of them lives outside, in a constant state of readiness for imminent launch. The other is a bit of a garage queen.

Similar for me, except the one in the garage needs putting back together as it's been off the road for 14 years. paperbag

I chose to get a Z3 because I knew it would be left on my drive (it's galvanised, I bought a hard top and with the 3.0 badge removed doesn't really stand out as being in the least 'flashy'). While I might have been able to pick up a very rough TVR Chimaera at the time I would have been more concerned about leaving it outside, let alone not being able to work on it without the use of my garage.

Maybe one day I'll finish my 'garage Queen' then I might consider selling both cars and getting that TVR...

I've fallen into the same trap but now trying to use them more. It's just that I like them to look pristine! :-/

We can't keep anything outside, not even for a couple of minutes. They're washed outside but then leathered in the garage or under the carport.

The reason: my drive is completely covered by a canopy of 100'+ trees and they just rain down sap, leaves, seeds etc non-stop. Trees have TPOs too. Literally 30 seconds and you can feel it on the paint.

Total pain in the arse.

All my cars have been parked outside. I've left my 911, M6 and Impreza parked on a drive in a stty area of London for over a fortnight while on holiday. Generally insurance covers any issues, and tbh if I'd feel uncomfortable leaving my pride and joy outside, given that cars are a massive interest for me, I'd find somewhere else to store them.

I love my bike, I'd ride it into the house if I could! My motorcycle takes up the garage, the car could probably be squeezed in, but I like my bike to take pride of place in there, it's not some stty storage locker. Of course, keeping the bike in there on it's own means plenty of space for spare tyres, paddock stands, tools, oils etc.

Mine doesn't fit in the garage. I have a car cover to put over it though which helps prevent it freezing over and getting pooped on by birds.
