Making an exhaust quieter?
Discussion
A long overdue 'improvements' campaign is to begin shortly on my Golf ED30. Getting the exhaust gases out will be one of the items on the agenda and a bespoke stainless exhaust will be a relative necessity, the reason I say bespoke is that I'd like the efficiency gains of a better exhaust but with relatively minimal noise increases so may need something tailored for the job. Of course there will be more noise with a straighter path for the gases to get out of the car, plus, lighter weight stainless doesn't absorb noise like the mild steal does. Any ideas on creating an exhaust that is as quiet as it can be without sticking something on the end of the exhaust that will restrict airflow? Current thoughts are:
More silencer boxes.
Silencers packed with e-glass/whatever.
Exhaust wrapping, potentially down the length of the exhaust.
I do big mileage and although it's quite nice to hear a fruity exhaust tone on a Sunday morning hoon, the same noise on a hack up the M6 can be a little tiresome!
