Tracing cars previous owners
Discussion
Is there any way of finding out the previous owners of a car (obviously have most recent on v5)
Nothing untoward, but just bought a £500 car with no sevice history and thought a quick letter to them may provide info regarding if the cambelt was ever changed when it was in their ownership! If its never been changed its done 40k over schedule, so i find it hard to believe it won't have been (is a tricky car to change it on, so don't really wanna attempt it but equally want to do a trackday with some confidence in it)

I'm not sure...
At a guess you'd need a specific reason to request the data; under the Data Protection Act you wouldn't have any real entitlement to it. That's if it even exists - which it probably does. Not sure about data retention rules for car ownership.
Anyway dodgy service history won't be a good enough reason, in my opinion. And it's a £500 car - at that price it's a gamble. If you're taking it racing then changing the cambelt is only the beginning; any number of things could blow up or drop off. So I'd say just risk it. If all hell breaks loose then you've lost £500. If you muck around changing random bits, like the belt, and something else happens - clutch, transmission, driveshafts etc then you've lost £500 plus parts, effort and time. Just have some fun!
