A little different from the "things non-petrolheads say" discussion, which is for amusing remarks from people who simply don't really care about cars.

This discussion is for those howlers that come from those who claim to be petrolheads, but say things that reveal they know sweet F.A. about our chosen passion.

I'll get the ball rolling. I just overheard a guy at work describe his dream car as a "'67 Chevy Mustang".....

You'd have to be quite special to think they rev higher.

When the 'dream car' topic gets raised, one always says "Bugatti Veyron" and its about a 50-50 chance that they are either a petrol head or an idiot.

General bleating about their diesel TDi - "pulls like a train", "goes like a rocket" etc.

Also I hear a fair few billy bullst stories about how an reasonably OK car in it's day, say a Cav SRi, performed amazing feats a 65 AMG Merc would struggle with today.

Do you pronounce Audi as 'Ow-dee' or 'Or-dee'? And is Renault, 'Ren-oh' or 'Ren-olt'?

The ones who insist that their beaten up piece of st diesel keeps up with subarus and porsches to 130.

No mate, they were unaware they were in a race.

My old Honda GL1500 had a flat v6 technically.

180 degree V 6 cylinder configuration.

There might be one in a car, don't know?

Would you say the Ferrari Testarossa had a flat 12 or a flat V12?

Surely the GL1500 had a flat 6.

Normally these people are identified by how excited they get about VAG diesels. "It's got mountains of torgue!", "I get pushed back in my seat by the torgue" etc.

True boxers have each crankpin controlling only one piston/cylinder while 180° engines, which superficially appear very similar, share crankpins. The 180° engine is considered to be a type of V engine.
This is where I got it from.

Can't count how many times I've heard this. A favourite of those whose sole forum for motoring stuff is Top Gear
