Kintyre Roads Policing, A Missed Opportunity
Discussion
Was at a family gathering in a house near here where from the front garden we could see the traffic police hiding up here:

From the road heading south (which is the direction they were speed checking) you would not see them. Why?
What a missed opportunity.
This is a road which has seen many fatalities over the years, although not at this section, not in these conditions and not at this time of day.
Many vehicles passed by without a clue that there was a police presence in the area. What a missed opportunity, had the car been visible, drivers could have paid more attention to their surroundings for miles either side.
As it happens, only those who got collared for exceeding the 60mph on this long straight knew anything about the police presence and so only they could be influenced to drive with added care.

Yes I've seen a police car up the road to the windfarm quite a few times. I used to work at Tigh Chromain cottage (just a little bit further down the road) which was on a corner, the speed people rocketed past was unreal. However the people who are doing the speed tend to be locals who know the road VERY well. Is that an excuse? No, however I would consider it a safe road now they have actually repaired some of the craters in the road. In my experience, the accidents happen when the roads are littered with tourists who sit at 25 miles per hour looking out the window rather than looking at which side of the road they are on.
There is absolutely a problem with inappropriate speed on these roads. Whether it's 35mph over spilled slurry ("handles like a greased pig" doesn't even get a look in) or a lepton over badly surfaced bits.
Hiding up an access road then high-tailing it on blues and twos DOES NOT reduce accidents.
The more i think about what i saw, the more inexcusable i find it.

Not very often you see Kintyre mentioned on PH, never mind in GG!
I've driven this road near on 100 times in the last two years and know the bit you have highlighted; I'm wary about my speed as I need my licence for my job, but have never seen the Police sitting here, although I always expect them to be!
You tend to find them sitting as you go in or out of the villages/30mph zones; they were asked about this, and it was reported in the local papers that they do so because if people are speeding through the villages, then what will they get up to on the open road? The locals are aware of this, the tourists aren't and can be a nuisance for doing 40-45mph everywhere.
I'll be honest and say I never go above 10% + 2 unless overtaking and want to complete the manoeuvre as briskly as possible, then it's back down to a speedo indicated 65.
There's been to many fatalities on the A83 over the years and they rightfully throw the book at you if you rip the arse out of it; a close family friend was killed last year on it through no fault of their own, which I can't say to much about as the case is ongoing.
