Hi

I've just got the better half a second hand lexus 50/50 cash/HP.

We told the dealer a number of times that that car is to be registered in her name as she'll be insuring it. Got the V5 back today and it's in my name. Doh!

Don't want to call the insurance company just yet Incase they slap her with a charge. If they get chance though they'll try and wriggle out of it if we had an accident I imagine.

What are the chances of DVLA changing the name or will we have to put her down as a new owner (last resort and worse case!)? Maybe if the dealer gives us a letter explaining the mistake it might help. DVLA in my experience are always a pain to deal with.

Thanks for help/advice

Insurers are rarely in the least worried about ownership of the spouse. But you do need to let them know. Alternatively, if you write and explain the situation to DVLA, they should transfer it over without adding an extra former keeper.

I'd be giving the V5 back to the dealer and saying "we told you this isn't what we wanted, sort it out."

I certainly wouldn't! The car's been sold. The salesman has other things on his mind now. The V5 will be flung onto a desk "for later".

I've had a similar problem with the address on a V5 from the dealer, as well as my name being spelled wrong.

I simply sent the letter to the DVLA address with the V5 asking what details I wanted changed. I wasn't penalised at all, they just sent a new V5 with the new details. Assume it would be similar experience.

Same thing happened to me when i bought a new car for the Mrs, the dealer registered it in my name instead of hers.

All i did was phone the DVLA, they verbally updated the details over the phone (i know, i couldn't believe it either) and sent out a new V5 in her name (without increasing the number of owners).

Give it a try.
