Nice quickish 4x4 for £11k ????
Discussion
Hi I'm new to posting on the forums but have been using the site for a while for motoring advice and buying cars.
I know the terms quick and 4x4 don't go together amazingly well but these are the criteria I'm looking for in a car at the moment. I've got around £11k to spend and would prefer to buy an under 100k car, I was just hoping for some advise on what I'm best to look at.
I've been looking into this since Christmas and have quite a thing for early cayenne turbos, just worried about these horror stories of £16k replacement engines when the dreaded knocking noise arrives. Are they really ticking time bombs or do you only hear the bad and not the thousands of good ones?
Mpg isn't really a issue for me as I only do 6 miles a day but could do without a 16k repair bill and constant issues as I'm sure you can all appreciate there is a big difference between £50 a week for fuel/ £500 for some brake pads and £16k for engine replacement.
Another model I've been looking at is the Mercedes ML 2005 onwards. As the 63 amg is considerably out my price range and so to the 420cdi. I'm left with the 500 but seems to me it doesn't make sense to get the 500 as the 320 cdi has more torque and will hold value better and be easier to shift but will a 320 be too slow and boring for me as I've sold cars in the past for buying models with the wrong engines.
I'll apologise in advance if this is in the wrong section. I'm sure I'll be told if it is.
Any advice would be welcomed as I'm in the position to buy at the moment and don't want to make a choice I'll regret. Thanks in advance,
Sam

If youre only doing 6 miles a day Id avoid any deisel.
Range rover supercharged? Usefully quick..... Ive had most of your list over the years and Id say the Range Rover offers the best overall package and feel good factor.
Id disagree with x5s being well put together....my 4.6iS needed a whole raft of bits including a replacement gearbox, starter motor and wheel bearings and it was an approved used 3 year old/50k miles car. Maybe they mellow with age?

I had a 105k miles range rover supercharged and it drove like new right up until I crashed it avoiding bring sideswiped by a lorry. Probably the best vehicle I've ever had, literally no compromises on it, apart from maybe cornering speed, but once you get used to the lean they are better in corners than you'd imagine. Not sure you'd get one under 100k for your budget but really if the interior has been looked after it won't matter as they are built very well (unless you get a Friday afternoon special). They can be expensive to run though, an E55k AMG is turning out to be cheaper to run than the FFRR.
How about a Lexus.
There are probably better examples than thus about but looks nice.

Wow thanks for the quick replies never looked at things like jeeps so that will give me something to look at. Had a lot of x5's in at work with expensive rear suspension and bushes issues which put me off a little bit but with a family of bmw fans the main reason for not looking at them too much was so I could have something different.
Love the range rover supercharged vogues what are they like to own heard they have quite a lot of issues? What is there to look out for when buying to ensure bagging a good one? Would probably avoid the sport as most in my price range that I have looked at are nails which smell like like previous owners used them as drug carriers.
Anyone with experience of the old cayenne turbos? I know they aren't the most attractive cars but that power and interior spec is hard to ignore.

I had a supercharged RR & it was fantastic only sold because I do a fair bit of mileage & the running costs were just too high. If you like the Porsches look at the 4.5 S. I borrowed a friends for a weekend a while back & it was very fast on the twisty B roads. Great power & a strong engine. Also if you are only doing a few miles per day & want to 'hammer' the car a bit a turbo won't like that much. Being overused on short trips is the main cause of them blowing which is a fortune to fix.
