Hello everyone,

I am potentially looking at one of the above motors. Does anyone have any figures to compare the running costs of these two (servicing, brakes, cam-belt etc)? I've looked on parkers which suggest that they should both return a combined mpg of around 29/30.

My preference is for the 406 at the moment, it just feels more special, but I get the feeling that it'll cost more to run? I appreciate the 406 is probably the better car but I need to make sure the running costs aren't significantly higher.

Cheers

I averaged 34mpg from my 406 V6 - the 210bhp version in auto form. It spent most of its time with me on the motorway, so little urban driving to bring the average down.
It was a comfortable place to spend time and a pretty thing to look at, though people do love to criticise the boggo 406 dash.
The servicing costs escape me now, but the biggy will be cambelt change. I was quoted £600 when I looked around, but sold the car before it needed doing.

Bumpers were always hideously expensive too.

Have a look on the 406 Coupe Club website. They'll fill you in on any questions.

Interesting choices - how did you arrive at them? Good to see someone going for something different.

Can't comment on running costs but both are based on regular repmobiles so shouldn't be terrifying. Both are also getting old so could be due work.

I had a 406 coupe 3.0 for a while. My review: epic sound, reasonable performance. Nice, comfy interior, good for passengers. Refined and smooth but at the time Peugeot were making incredible handling cars and this one was just 'OK'. It wasn't as good as a 306 or smaller engined 405/406 in the corners.

I have a 2.2 406 Coupe and love it. Very comfy, good ride, looks great, well equipped and everything works as it should. Engine is a bit flat and sound like a diesel when you start it, but that's pretty much it for downsides.

I've not driven a V6 although some people have told me it's not as well balanced due to the heavier engine, and the cambelt is in the region of £500 to change

Not much in it really.

Surely you'd be better with a 328 BMW for around the same price.

I'm a Ford man, but I'd take e 406. The Cougar wasn't Henry's finest moment IMO.

The V6 in the Ford is a peach as long as its not ticking. Used to average 38 on a run in an ST24.

Thanks for all the replies, it's good to see there's not too much in it. The main costs of the 406 over the cougar seem to be cam-belt and brakes. I also hear that the cougar can be difficult to find tyres for?

The BMW idea doesn't interest me I'm afraid, it just does appeal to me at all.

I was originally considering some type of retro hatch back, but my budget doesn't really allow for what I'm after. I was then looking at smaller good handling cars like the puma, but I've decided after having an mx5 I want to try something completely different and the idea of a cruiser came up. I need back seats so cars such as the gtv, prelude, 406 and cougar made the list. After looking at running costs and thinking about what I really want it's come down to the 406 and cougar.

I had a Cougar V6 - loved it and it gave no trouble whatsoever up to when my mate (who I sold it to) traded it in on the scrappage scheme for a fking Fiat 500.

Engine was lovely.

Brakes (as mentioned on the 406 above) were very cheap to replace by comparison

Just past 1000 miles in my Cougar V6 since I've had it. Can't fault it. The engine is great and just goes smith and effortless. Avg over the 1000 is 31.8mpg, mixed driving.

Brakes are cheap and a doddle to change. I've done the front discs and pads on mine. As for tyres the previous owner had switched to 205/55/16 as opposed to 215's.
I got two Toyo t1r's for the rear for £38 and £39 respectively on Flea bay, delivered.

It's like a small van with the seats down and the boot with them up is plenty cavernous! Although the boot lip is very high but ofcourse it was never designed to be a load lugger.

As for the 406, it is the prettier IMO and I did see a lovely wicked red 3.0 for sale before I got the cougar but after my last experience with a French car I was a bit put off. That and it was a sizeable chunk more to insure.

Back to the cougar, I still enjoy it every trip.

We've had two 406 Coupes a 2.0 then the 3.0V6

The Brembos on the V6 are bonkers expensive from Pug dealers, but I got the discs and pads (genuine Brembos) from Brakes International in Rochdale and they were cheap as chips.

Nice photos of the 406 and cougar, cheers.

Does anyone know how much the brakes can cost on the 406? I'm having difficulty finding out cots online.

This is a good shout, although I don't want to have to rely on one company for car parts if possible.

Really like both of those, tough choice, sure i heard the alternators on the Cougar are a nightmare, if you choose them make sure it is charging.
I would probably go with Ford but probably regret it every time i saw a 406.
