Newish vs used. Both 34k. Needed for day to day around town, longer trips out of town and big enough for 2 very young children + mrs over next 4-5 years. It'll be our only car.

What would you do all things considered? C63 estate is 2012 with DCT, m135i is 2014 with auto and a few more toys.

I really can't decide.

I think the running costs of the BMW will be lower (fuel, consumables, servicing) but it will depreciate more. The C63 will hold its value better but will be more expensive to run day to day.

Both have nice engines and I don't think one is any more or less practical than the other. Yes the C63 has a bigger boot but I don't think I'll miss the extra space.

Would love some input.

As children tend to grow I would suggest the C63 as in reality there ain't a lot of room in the 1 Series. Plus, they look like a gay shark from the front end view

Planning kids?
Play Golf?
Lots if weekends away?
Ever go camping?

Subjective Merc looks much nicer

Subjective/no fact noise Merc beats pretty much any car bar a V12 Aston.

The C63 all day long!, it's a pretty special car whereas the BMW isn't imo.

I'm not much of a car nut but the C63 looks gorgeous, and the 1 series has always looked like a dog to me.

Have a look at both of them and see what you think with regards to room. The new 1 series has plenty of room in the back + boot so don't discount it.

I've got a m135i, well it's leased, I don't think it's nearly as ugly as made out in fact in the metal it actually looks nice to my eyes, the engine is magnificent and it really shifts and handles well. I find the interior a lovely place to be.

Having said all that If I were actually buying one of the two you mention it would be the c63 everyday of the week.

I know the C63 sounds amazing,,,,it's the main reason I've wanted one for so long but the M135i is a really nice package.

Interior space wise - both are the same as far as I can tell. The C63 has a bigger boot but the m135i's is not minuscule.

Looks are subjective but as someone said earlier, I think the bmw is a good looking car. The C63 also looks very well proportioned and I'm looking at the 2012 model with facelift and DCT.

MPG will be much better on the BMW but that is obvious.

BMW do a service package for 500 pounds for 4 years servicing which I think is very good. The C63 will be more.

The two cars I'm looking at cost exactly the same....yet despite all the comments in favour of the C63, I'm looking for something that is practical and convenient (less of a burden in all respects). I feel the bmw is the better everyday car, is special enough to give me my kicks, is practical enough with small ones, and is modern enough to be economical and lower maintenance than the C63. It feels like a modern car whereas the C63 feels very old school.

I've had a petrol L322 rangie recently as well as an E34 m5 and Integrale. Apart from the E34 which has been a dream, the other two were problematic and pushed me to the extreme of wanting something new with zero fuss.

Going to test drive both and will report back, and need to read up on c63 buying guides. Thank you for all the comments so far,

2 small kids, camping once or twice a year, few airport runs, daily school runs and shopping etc

Absolutely no golf

I agree. Thing is the purchase price and monthly finance is at the upper limit of what Im comfortable spending so I have to take into account day to day running costs, parts prices, servicing and consumables.

...and depreciation!

If you're ok with the large difference in running costs then C63 is the one to have. I do wonder why there are so many three or four year old ones available for around £30k though. Is there a massive service due around that time?

That's useful, thank you. Have you experience of the C63? Anything in particular you prefer about it?

The 135 is ugly as sin. The C63 is a bit "old man". Tough one to call.

The C63 has more presence. Go for that one.

I have a facelift C63 estate.

It is epic, not least because it sounds like this:
