Silverstone Auctions Salon Prive results

Inaugural Syon Park sale raises £10m, including £130K (really!) for Range Rover #1

Silverstone Auctions has just released the results for its Salon Prive sale, the auction you may recall featured the 'Stradale' consignment of breathtaking sports and supercars.

Exceeded a £2m estimate!
Exceeded a £2m estimate!
Perhaps the most interesting results were in fact those cars that didn't sell. Both the F40 and F50 remained unsold , as did the Miura P400. Hmm. But the overall sales rate was 61 per cent and the auction still made £9.9m so there are plenty of sold lots to discuss too.

The very first Range Rover produced is the biggest talking point, with a final selling price of £132,250. The beautiful Ferrari Daytona Spider from the Stradale group of cars just exceeded its estimate at £2.27m while the 250 GT Pininfarina S2 sold way above predictions at £707,250.

It wouldn't be a classic auction without an air-cooled Porsche or two selling at mega bucks. This exceptionally brown 1972 911 S just beat its estimate at £161,000 and a 2.4 S Targa from a year later made £195,500.

The full results list from Salon Prive can be seen here. The next Silverstone Auctions sale is take place in The Wing at Silverstone on Saturday September 20.

^^^^^THIS^^^^^

Looking at the classifieds I would have thought the F40 was a bargain at £600k, evidently not scratchchin

I have to say I must have missed something, since when did Daytona spider get to £2.2m !!!

Last time I looked they were £600k ... or am I missing something.

No.1 range rover doesn't surprise me .... however how much of it is No.1 is up for speculation !!

Should be good for good classics ...... runs off to check garage !!

It is all rather odd. £43K for a 1995 Bentley Turbo S, £72K for a 1989 Merc 500SL.
Doesn't it makes the fixed head Jag XK120 look an absolute bargain for £66,700?

Those 911 prices are extraordinary.

If you're over 6 foot, getting into and out of an XK120 is vitrually impossible to do and fully impossible to do elegantly! That may explain the relatively low price for what is undoubtedly a wonderful piece of design and machinery.

With the F40/f50 not selling, perhaps the market is (finally) beginning to cool. Not just the classic car market, either. Klarmann, Buffett, Marks all seem to be cautious of the financial markets being overheated at the moment.

As a schoolboy I went into Strattons in Wilmslow to look at a Daytona Spider and remember asking the salesman how much it was. His answer was that it was just short of £60,000 to which I replied that I was just short of £60,000 so unfortunately couldn't afford it. It seems I'm now short of about £2.2m to buy one!

The SL price is extraordinary too, it must be a very special one

That's a bubble all right, just waiting to go with a big, big bang.

People are pulling huge sums out of Banks due to low interest rates and a poor stock market and walloping it into cars this is driving the market and creating the demand.

Correction due soon, we'll all look back and wonder what on earth people were paying for old Landies etc..

It is a superb time to be a seller. They cashed in just before the forthcoming crash. Good luck to them!

The prices for those 911s was mad. What was so special about them to warrant those prices?

This is a high water mark for the Spyder but examples have been selling in the States for over $2m in the last 12 months.

You have to understand they don't make them anymore. Become a desirable classic!
Not everyone wants a complicated latest model Porsche with electric steering and auto gearbox!

Chris Evans bought the Daytona.

The classic car bubble is great for sellers right now.

But the people paying these prices aren't buying them because they are "simple" or anything like that. These people are buying them as investments. You won't find them being used much, if at all. How they drive is meaningless to these buyers. Most of them aren't even interested in cars. They are in a bizarre loop where the value is all based on how much an investor can get selling it I. To another investor.
