With the new breeds of hybrid/EV, harvesting energy from brakes is a logical development - if you have previously used energy accelerating something, don't waste it if you need to slow it down again.

I remember reading about suspension energy recovery systems development, but can't remember who was working on it. It makes sense as there is a lot of movement (thus energy) in springs / shocks / mounts.

Not seen anything about it for a while though. Anyone heard much on progress / development?

Interesting thought and one I've not considered before. Imagine the technology would be very similar to some of the wave power harvesters, but on a smaller scale.

This would presumably have the advantage that if the suspension was designed to move about, move power would be "recovered".

Anything trying to harvest energy from the movement in my Audi's suspension would be hopeless, because it's rock hard. If there was a way to harvest something from the amount the occupants are thrown about in the car by it's awful suspension, that would work.

How much could you recover? Surely the energy is stored in the spring, and used to push the weight of the car back up. The only bit you could recover from would be the heat loss in the dampers?

If you "reclaim energy" from speed humps I bet your local council will find some way to tax it! smile

hehe good point. ZF are developing 'harvest pants' exclusively for S-line occupants!

If there was a "lot" of energy availible, our dampers would be hot. And, in everyday driving, they aren't......

Yes, there is "some" energy available, but not enough to overcome the massive cost in harvesting it. Added to which, as the mandated economy/emissions test cycles are done on a chassis dyno, the net co2 reduction over the all important legislative cycle would be zero. So OEMs aren't exactly going to be rushing to implement this.

(note: some damping systems can harvest energy as a side effect of them controlling the sprung mass, but these systems are also v expensive and a bit "new fangled" for OEMs to adopt at the moment)
