I'm entering a Charity Scumball rally race from Manchester to the South of France.

Need a car.

Plan is to mimic the Cannonball run Dean Martin/Sammy Davies junior characters.....red convertible/priest outfits.

.....but need to find a car for £500 (or damned near to it).

Immediate thoughts.... Early MX5 (stab at reliability) or a Fiat Barchetta (stupidity/italian...but LHD). Former seem ambitious, latter even moreso.

Any other thoughts??

TIA....

As long it doesn't split in two before end-october, I don't give a st (as long as I can get an MOT on it!!)

Yes, you will find Le Plod and his continental friends do not take at all kindly to that kind of event.

Why? Issues with Charity? Or just a garlic-munching lack of a sense of humour?

The stboxes we'll be in will be highly unlikely to be breaking any speed limits....!

That was my very first thought. Big old german barge.... But then I fell in love with the idea of the Dean Martin/Sammy Davis Jnr Cannonball/Priests idea......

.....either than or get an ambulance, grow a moustache and recruit a fat bd ;-)

I am willing to be separated from a Renault Espace that has been covered in fur to resemble a hairy cow and had previously been used to travel from Stirling to Monaco with no issues, MOT'd till Dec' and recently serviced. My plans to use it are looking like they are on the back burner

Oh now that I like.

Definite Dumb & Dumber back-up plan is the Martin/Davis Jnr Plan-A falls through.

We did one a few years ago in a 4L Cherokee. It wasn't shy on fuel but it did mean we could take the mountain pass into Italy. smile

Saab 900 or 9/3

Audi 80 Cab

MGF

Few ideas to add to your original list, reckon you'd be able to find any of the above with a short mot and tax for £500 or less!

If you're feeling ambitious what about trying to source a non-rusty TR7 and get it through an MOT for £500, there's a few about and they're generally cheap.

You want something decent-sized (to carry you, mates and kit in comfort), with bomb-proof mechanicals.
