Long story but I'll try to keep it brief. My S-Tronic box on my S4 Avant was failing (Seems to be commmon???? Or am I imagining things??) so as I have an Audi Extended Warranty I took it along to the dealer and told them that the box was faulty. They replaced the mechatronic. When I went to pick up the car before I drove away there was a huge big noise and it turns out there was an audio fault and they unplugged the subwoofer and said the audio control unit needed replacing and they would book the car in for two weeks time.

I drove the car away and after 2 weeks and 800 miles the gearbox is still a complete mess, even worse than before. The mechatronic failed to remedy it. In fact I was in the car with my two kids and when I went to reverse the car rolled forwards nesrly smashing into a wall. Horrified I got it recovered back to the dealer telling them they need to actually FIX the car now.

To my horror they told me that they would NOT in fact be covering the cost of the audio control unit because of 'water damage'?!

So now I'm left not knowing what on earth they are doing and I am disputing the water damage completely because there's never been ANY water ingress into the car.

Anyone got any advice here? I still don't know if they are going to hammer for me the gearbox?

Don't buy another Audi.

Once I get shut of this one, I won't.

Can't help I'm afraid, but try posting on the Audi/Volkswagen forum here on PH.

My friend's s-tronic gearbox failed and Audi were unbelievably evasive in fixing it. His car was of the road for weeks.when he finally got it back, it was still st and he sold it.

As I understand it, the S tronic gearbox is very similar, if not identical, to the VW DSG gearbox. I only mention this because my experience is only with the DSG gearbox.

When you mention the car rolling forwards when shifted into reverse, I'm pretty sure this is normal behaviour. This is because it takes a second or so for the box to put the car into its reverse gear, hence why you can roll forward slightly if you don't cover the brakes. This is also why the DSG / S tronic boxes can be a bit of a pain if you have to do a lot of manouvering. It's similar to how in D, it takes a moment for the car to shift into gear and begin creeping forward from a standstill - especially if you're on a gradient.

Unfortunately, whilst these dual-clutch boxes have a shift time far superior to that of a conventional automatic, the downside is that they're not as user friendly as a conventional automatic.

Out of interest... What in particular was wrong with the gearbox that made you take it to Audi?

ETA: I think the reason why some repair claims are refused by Audi (and other manufacturer's of similar gearboxes) is because people perceive the gearbox's behaviour as faulty, where in actual fact it's just a characteristic of the box i.e. they're not as smooth as a "normal" automatic with a torque convertor. In fact they're not even classed as an automatic box but rather two, electronically controlled manual gearboxes.
