Yesterday whilst on the A77 I came up behind this van:

Excuse the poor picture. Now I know it says survey work on the back of it, but it was pulling behind the van a tiny trailer that was offset so that it was right behind the nearside wheel. He was travelling at a decent speed of about 55mph with it pouring a fair amount of what I can only assume was water. You can see the trail of it on the road.

I dropped back as I was unsure and it was starting to spray the car. This was fed to the trailer via a connection on the van. I travelled behind it for about 10mins where it must have poured 100's of litres on to the road over that time.

This is probably one for the road builders/engineers but what was it surveying and why do they need vast quantities of water for it?

As an absolute guess with no basis at all, is this how they test the grip level of a surface in wet and dry conditions to see if the surface needs replacing?

or if it gets a reflection back from the water is has pooled into a hole and they can measure the size of it or the camber if the line isn't straight?

Ah so that's what it is, it did seem to be making quite a lot of noise too. Thankyou!

Especially considering it's an LHD car!

Should change your name to Sad Soul, have you got nothing better to do with your time but than try and catch people out?

If you look, you might see it was taken from the passenger side.

Oh, and it's 'posting it online' if we are into petty things like that. wink

I used to do this in my first uni summer job for Cumbria County Council. They've obviously changed the speed, as I had to maintain a constant 30mph (more difficult than you might think).

It is indeed a grip tester. The van I usd had an offset tow bar and a big tank of water in the back. This fed down to a three wheel trailer, where the third wheel was a slick Dunlop, all connected to a laptop in the cab. And yes, it used to drive drivers behind us juts, they thought we were driving slow on purpose!

I'm guessing you didn't really think that one through.
