I see these can now be specced on the Citroen DS3 - assume they're legal now (think anything other than a flash on/off used to be outlawed). Can these be fitted to any car now and will they become the Chav's new favourite accessory from Halfords?

I think the latest version of Audi r8 also has these, so I'd think they must be legal.

I was watching myth busters the other day, and they were driving a mustang, don't know if it was a current model or the new one, and the rear has 3 lights each side that sequence outwards when indicating.

the ogle aston martin had a similar feature in the 70's. a row of brake lights which would illuminate more bulbs the harder you braked.

Ford put this sort of glitz onto the Mercury Cougar back in the '60s. Ain't no new inventions...

The brake lights over here doing it would make people think you had a brake light issue. Those who understood at least would know for sure which you you were telling people you were going (which isnt always true!)

This. Unfortunately red turn signals are prohibited here (although not on the continent IIRC). Which is a shame as they look good.

If it's cooler with the kids than visbility-reducing smoked lenses, probably the most retarded invention ever, bring it on.

Although if in 5 years we've got annoying distracting animated st tacked on to cars I might change my mind, bad enough with cyclists buzzing round thinking stupid flickering lights makes them invincible.

Was going to incorporate a sequence like that in a LED retrofit I did, but decided against for the 'upcoming chav favourite' reason.
Theres lots of info on hidplanet for anyone interested:

Light's will eventually become as much part of the design language as body panels and glass area.

Audi really are making a statement about light design. They were talking recently about rear foglamps which would shine a laser beam from the rear of the car which following motorists would pick out as a red warning projected off the airborne water droplets!

Given the indicator needs to be used for these to be seen, it would seem to be a waste of an option / design budget for many drivers.

What a load of crap. This is the exact sort of thing that manufacturers that are adding to cars for no reason other than they can, it has little or no benefit to the owner but when it goes wrong it'll cost a frigging fortune to fix. When that reaches production and a car is rear ended the cost of that light unit will write it off.

Its just bloody stupid.

Yes I know I'm a miserable old git getmecoat

It's a normal indicator on the horizontal with the added sequenced bit up the curve.

Utter ste if you ask me and more to expensively go wrong.

Yeah, I personally think we should halt all progress for fear if how much it will cost should it go wrong. Remember the same being said about the new Audi TT dash. Wonderful looking thing, but ooooh it will cost when it goes bad.

So what benefit does a lighting unit that looks like paint sloshing around have ?

Progress and tech is fine where there is some benefit, I'm really struggling to see who that thing benefits.

ETA: This is the company whose engines my mate is pulling out at under 40k miles because the piston rings are made of something akin to tin foil. How about they make some progress to actually manufacture something with a bit of quality to it instead of pissing money away of crap like this ?
