I'm looking for a new car and am in the midst of conducting research thereon - "What Car", visiting showrooms and so on.

I want a saloon or coupe with four doors and a "proper" tailgate. (By "proper" I mean a tailgate which incorporates the rear window and is near-horizontal when shut.) Most coupe's had such tailgates in the past but in recent times, it seems, these have fallen out of favour with the manufacturers who seem to prefer coupes to have a traditional boot and a "fixed" rear window which in my view reduces practicality.

My budget is £15k - £35k. Perhaps members would be kind enough to suggest some models which fit the bill. Although I would prefer to buy a new car I would consider a relatively recent used car if it's a model which is no longer being produced but fits the template. Thanks.

If the window lifts, it's not a saloon and if it has four doors it's not a coupe. smile

What you seem to want, is a five door hatchback? The market is flooded with them.

At risk of derailing the thread, that definition is getting cloudy.

True. These days "coupe" seems to simply mean "more expensive version" rather than alluding to a particular body style.

Doesn't change the fact that the OP seems to be complaining that no-one makes five-door hatchbacks any more. hehe

4 door coupes have been around for many many years

I think the CLS boot does what you want OP?

Or the CLS shooting brake but that is technically an estate I suppose.

A 5/3 series GT is probably perfect.

Problem is the £35k upper limit, and the desire for something new.

That £35k just gets you into a BMW 3-Series GT, a 325 diesel... 5-GT will be out of budget by £10-15k.

The Mondeo is a good car, and will have some seriously epic run out deals with the new one just around the corner.

Many thanks for everyone's responses.

So far, then, we have the following suggestions which seem to suit-

Ford Mondeo Hatchback
BMW 3 Series GT Hatchback
Audi A5 Sportback
MG6 Hatchback
Mercedes CLS
Skoda Superb Hatchback

Kindly please ignore my references to "Coupe" and "Saloon" in my original posting as these appears to have muddied the waters somewhat.

My restated requirements, then, are as follows-

I want a car with four doors and a "proper" tailgate. (By "proper" I mean a tailgate which incorporates the rear window and is near-horizontal when shut.) My budget is £15k - £35k. Although I would prefer to buy a new car I would consider a relatively recent used car if it's a model which is no longer being produced but which meets my needs. Thanks.

It's hardly a looker but by some distance this will be the best drivers car.

Ah, so you want a five door hatchback with a protruding boot? Add the Octavia to the list. I'm pretty sure there's still an Insignia hatchback, too.

ETA: I thought the CLS was a saloon not a hatch?

There's the 4-series GC too, although I don't know if it's in budget.

With that background that makes it look like it's been stretched rather than that's how bad it looks in reality.

Am I being thick? I have read that over and over and still don't undrstand what you are trying to say.

I'd say go for an Octavia VRS by the way.
