Right, I know these are done to death but people on here seem to know a great deal and I've seem a lot of useful stuff on here in the past do I thought I'd ask opinions.

I'm looking for a weekend car to buy, budget of about 7k max. I have a van during the week so doesn't need to be massively practical (no track or kit cars though), only the other half and myself so 2 seaters are fine by me.

Requirements are:

-Not too old (ideally 2003 or newer, may be swayed by something special though)
-Petrol ideally although a big diesel engine may work as I like the effortless way they drive
-like coupes but a hot hatch does appeal
-mpg isn't a massive concern as it's only weekend use but anything single digits is a no-go
- as it's a weekend car, I would like a bit of fun but it doesn't have to be the absolute best car on the road. Just something that would put a smile on your face when you get it moving

All I can think of so far is a mk1 TT 3.2, an e46 330ci, and I do quite like the corsa vxr. As it's only a weekend car, ideally I don't want to settle for a lesser engine. Like the TT, I know I could get a decent 1.8t with money to spare but I would prefer the 3.2 as I've been around that engine in friend's golfs and A3s so i think it would feel a bit more special.

Is there anything I've overlooked?

Cheers guys

It was in with a chance until insurance decided to go through the roof. Can't justify it for a weekend car unfortunately.

I'll have a look at the vx/elise but I'm not sure how I would live with them, I have back problems so might not be the best selection for me. Worth a look though

If Boxster insurance is a problem I think you are likely to find ALL sportscar insurance is a problem.

Maybe the booster is just one of those ones that throw up randomly high premiums for me as an individual, one of those things no one can answer. Oh well.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a sports car, I didn't specify a 2 seater as the only option, just that I could probably get away with it. But I do like some hot hatches and coupes, which is why I said I've looked at the corsa vxr, bmw 330 and tt 3.2.

That jag is nice, will have to have a better look when I get back from work.

Didn't the 4.0 have issues though? Something in the back of my mind says I read something about 4.0 problems and the later 4.2 was the more reliable engine

Integra Type R. Though for 7k you might not get a nice DC5; maybe look at the DC2s?

Like this one? (Picked from classifieds at random, just under budget)

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/h...

Or sticking with Honda, you can get a lot of S2k for £7k now. Fun to drive, quick enough for most purposes, and might be kinder on your back than an Elise.

Beats the hell out of getting a Corsa, anyway.

That teg is nice. I've never been in or driven anything with VTEC though, I've heard a lot complaints about all the power being top end and nothing at normal driving speeds. How true is this? Or is it all subjective? A high revving NA does appeal though

The 4.0 had nikasil liners and plastic timing chain adjuster as far as i remember.
The nikasil shouldnt be an issue because fuel no longer contains the chemical that destroys nikasil.
So just buy one with the adjuster thingy replaced.
(Or stretch the budget for a 4.2)

It's subjective. They have more than enough power for general driving but if you want to give it some then you need to use the gearbox & exploit the revs.

Oh right ok. I'll keep that in mind then. It's definitely one to look at as it does have that special quality to it.

That's good news then, I'll have to get myself out in one and see how I get on with it. It's a good shout though

If you're thinking hot hatches surely the Civic type R or Focus ST/RS must be worth a look to see what's in your price range?

I'd considered a civic but was unature for the same reasons I said about the integra and s2k. But I'll go back to it and have another look now. I do like the FN2 as it's a bit different to the usual styling you get from mainstream car makers.

The focus I was put off my some horror stories I'd heard and my brother in law had one which was a constant money pit. I'm not much of a Ford fan anyway if I'm honest.

Want Want Want! Although it's suspiciously cheap to say it's only done 57k miles. Also, the seller keeps stating it has 400bhp, which is wrong. The 4.2 cars had 400bhp, the 4.0 has 370bhp.

Yeah, it was just an example really of what might be available for the budget.

It's a policy of mine never to buy a car from anyone who writes the ad in block capitals anyway smile
