Refined(ish) 4WD Load Luggers
Discussion
Looking out of curiosity more than anything to se if there is a one size fits all weekend car. Something 4WD for snowy peak district, muddy fields and tracks, taking kayaks onto sand and for mountain bike expeditions, big enough boot space to put bikes in whole and carry other camping gubbins and refined enough not to leave your ears bleeding after a 4 hour drive.
My only suggestions are:
4WD Transit/Transporter and I'm not convinced the 4WD is actually up to very much (though willing to stand corrected)
L200/Hilux/Navara - Not that much boot space
Workhorse version of the Disco - again, not that much boot space
So if the two guys from the Fast Show re-united, what would they offroad in today
Slow work from home day......

Transporter 4Motion (with suitable tyres) would be a good compromise (and also fashionable in certain circles).
Plenty of room, competent off tarmac (modest ground clearance taken into account) and bigger engined ones should be amusing enough to drive.
A large SUV (Discovery, Land Cruiser, Shogun etc) should also do the trick, with slightly less luggage space.

Is the 4Motion actually any good or is it mostly gimmicky? Appreciate it wont match a Defender, but would it really be any use in proper mud or wet sand?Plenty of room, competent off tarmac (modest ground clearance taken into account) and bigger engined ones should be amusing enough to drive.
Low budget - Bongo / Delica
Mate had a 4WD Sprinter - very rare but he was a landscaper so it came in handy, however the 4WD controls kept breaking and were very expensive to fix.
Van 4WD is designed to get you across a muddy field etc not African expeditions although as always it's surprising what even basic 4wd can do, similarly I've pulled a Land cruiser out of a flat field as it couldn't get any grip on wet grass.
